Just talked to Chris from Tucson.  He said they (Stefan, Kurt, and himself) didn't sleep much last night.  They tried to sleep under some picnic tables, but Chris said he didn't actually sleep.  He said the three of them have pretty much been riding together, although the rigid single is obviously slower on the downhills.  Sounds like their sleeping bags and bivy gear is all wet.  He said he feels good overall, and if it weren't for the weather today, he'd be doing great.  He sounds very wary of the weather on Mount Lemmon and really hopes he will be able to find a cabin in Summerhaven.  He was about to grab some Starbucks and then head out.  Hopefully he'll find a place to get a little rest at some point, he's sounding pretty tired.  It's going to be a colllllllllllld day for him for sure -- they sure timed the one nasty day poorly!

Scott's parents here.  thumbsup

It's great watching the SPOTS!  With them and Chad's excellent commentary and photos of the trail, we almost feel like we are riding with Scott (in our dreams/nightmares).  icon_biggrin
Go Scotty!

This is some good stuff. Topofusion really enhances the SPOT effect. Scott is really onto something there.  I wish we could see the grueling effort better, the pictures are great.
Stefan has disappeared off the leaderboard and individual list, what`s up with that? Looks like Scott got at least 4 hours of shut eye in the little green tent, VS. Chris in a sleep deprived state, this should be a good one.

The race just got harder. A little bit of weather will define the decisions of the appropriate or inappropriate gear chosen. The management of one self and equipment traveled with becomes even more of a chore to not ignore.
- wet sleeping system = no sleep
- cold body = inefficiency
- muddy unmaintained bike = mechanicals
- slower speeds = more fueled burned = more to carry

I know from my experiences always pushing hard, my gear choices will be the result of a smiling comfortable racer or a grumpy moody uncomfortable racer. Regardless these guys are having a blast doing what they like to do. An expression of jealousy...

Does anyone know if Pete made it down?

Well put JayP!

Hopefully it doesn't snow on these guys, if so, the more prepared you are the better the outcome! I guess this is where experience comes into play...jealousy is setting in here in Wyoming!

Great ride yesterday!! Good luck to all the racers, stay with it! I'm staying tuned in!

It looks like the Boulder boys (I guess I should call them MEN) got the jump on Scott this morning.

I guarantee Scott ate a McDonald's before riding up Reddington, a smart move considering the cold weather that awaits them. He seems like he is right behind the 3 leaders, Stefan, Plesko and Kurt.

Here is a great webcam to look at the Catalinas (Mt Lemmon):  http://www.cs.arizona.edu/camera/    It gives you an idea of where they will be riding in a few hours...in that cloud with possibly light showers.

Finding a place to stay on Mt Lemmon (Summerhaven) could be tricky, so I hope those that plan to ride up are ready to possibly make the trip down Oracle Ridge at night if they cannot find a place to stay. I have thought about telling the racers to try staying in the public restrooms if they can't find a place to stay and find themselves in a bind.

The mud can be pretty bad on sections of Freeman Road and other sandy spots after Oracle; I doubt that any rain=clay can hinder their riding today, or at least I am not aware of any sections that would turn into clay.

The leaders have finished the road section in Tucson

and will start making the trip up to the Arizona Trail/Chiva Falls area. Some very fun singletrack with some pretty views.

30 miles with 10,000 feet of climbing awaits them

And remember, the general store closes at 6pm. It is the only place to resupply food that late.

Max rolled into Madera Canyon and it looks like everyone else is starting to move this morning. Great job guys!

I noticed that too.... If I know Scott, he took the time to eat some McDonald's before leaving Tucson. More food=more energy especially when you have not slept much.

I could be wrong, but we do both (Scott and I) have similar breathing problems (both of us carry inhalers). He might be worried (as I would be) about the cold weather. On my start last week, he was mentioning using his inhaler from time to time during the race. Cold weather does not help.

I heard Pete was making it down, still no reports on how many starters there were.

Errr.....it looks like Scott might be headed west toward Tucson on Broadway. There is a bike shop down Broadway, so perhaps he is going there.

No, I think that is a pre-race point. Some of the trackers were turned on days before the race start.

Hopefully they all remember to restart their SPOTs, since after 24 hours on tracking, I'm pretty sure it turns itself off.

(p.s. Pete was supposed to drive down with Chris and Kurt and then told them he wasn't going so they didn't pick him up -- not sure if he still made it down at the last minute??)

nope, check the newest two points. It looks like he is on Broadway and Wilmot, possibly heading home. He has passed both bike shops, definitely heading in the general direction of his house.

My SPOT was going west, past Broadway Bikes and to home.  I'm out.

Here's what Mt. Lemmon looked like heading into town.

Courageous move by team Colorado to head up  thumbsup thumbsup.  I had an awesome ride, but that's it for me.

Scott, your smarter than I thought. icon_biggrin Doesn't look like a very hospitable place to be with a damp bedroll. Let's wish the best for those who are venturing on.

Looks like plenty of rain over the Redington area (where Kurt, Stefan and Chris are right now):

Hope those guys are staying warm.  According to weather underground it's only 29 degrees at the top of the mountain now.

Forecast for Tucson in general:

Mostly cloudy with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Much cooler. Snow level near 5000 feet early. Snow accumulation around 4 inches above 6000 feet. Highs 60 to 66. Southwest wind 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation 50 percent.
