Chris just called. He finished just a while ago and has ridden into Superior. He says he didn't stop to sleep and has been riding since the previous 2 am, although I'm not sure how the last 25 miles could take him 6 hours, so it'll be interesting to see what he says when he comes to.
He sounds absolutely and totally wasted.
The sign of a good race!
He's (at the moment) really worried about finding everyone. He doesn't know how to find Kurt and/or Stefan, but I told him to just go to the nearest hotel and get some sleep and then worry about it. Sheryl or Maggie, if you know where those guys are, let me know and I'll pass it along. Chris doesn't have a cell phone with him.
(Is there just the one hotel in Superior -- El Portal? That's all I can find on the internet)
(and he thought Jefe was in front of him somewhere)

although I'm not sure how the last 25 miles could take him 6 hours, That's sounds about right for The Box (technical Jeep trail lots of bedrock ledges) climbs a lot and the short down hill is not fast in the dark unfamiliar terrain. Then the steepest hiking on the whole course when you are the most tired. It took Zach and I hours to do that stretch in 07 and we had had a good nights sleep in Oracle, and my legs weren't the same for a month. Tim

What an incredible achievement by these AZT Masters! Thank you to Scott and everyone for your excellent posts/commentaries throughout this race. We've been glued to the SPOT coverage since Friday where we've loved the photos and amazing SPOT video, too. As armchair supporters (junkies??) of Stefan's biking adventures, we now look forward to our next fix: CTR in August! Keep up the excellent work, all of you. Stefan's Mom & StepDad

Sheryl or Maggie, if you know where those guys are, let me know and I'll pass it along. Marni - I pm'd you Kurt's phone number - I'm really not sure where he is, and I didn't want to wake him up (and hopefully Chris is asleep as well by now). Hope that helps for them finding each other later. -Maggie

I can't believe they finished already, that's amazing. I better get Kurt's rack back to him.

Wow, great finish. Yes. And a good year to see it go down nearly analog. I'd say Kurt has fired a sortie across the bow of John Nobile and other Tour Divide start-listers soon to do battle. The Spot-effect:This armchair spectating is not only entertaining but inspirational. I had to burn off somebuilt up energy and ride this afternoon despite the snow and hail. This vicarious racing is tough work, but someone has to do it. I'm pumped for the hard day ahead!
Scott, this is cool to follow. Great job organizing it. Very inspirational. I'm stoked. I haven't been motivated for awhile. Great spectator race this year, I am watching from my phone at the San Diego airport.
It's getting interesting out there...I still think that the race winner will break the course record, but it's looking tighter now...Definitely a great rally by Stefan. 4 flats for Kurt! Ouch... ...I'm already biting my nails here. No nails left...
Who knew it would be such a nail-biter between racers to the end?!?! How awesome is that!

As armchair supporters (junkies??) of Stefan's biking adventures, we now look forward to our next fix... There's still some debate about cell phones in these kind of 'events.' The AZT 300 doesn't have a rule against them, but the GDR has in the past.
Getting info from the SPOT tracker by phone does change some things, but, you still have to pedal no matter what you know. And sometimes it can be better not to know, like you said.
When the four of us (Kurt, Stefan, Chris and I) were at Madera Canyon (two nights ago) we talked about getting tracker updates by phone for a bit. It might be a gray area, but there's no rule against it in the 300, so it's all good as far as this race is concerned.

We had 4 late night finishers.
Rough finish times so far:
Kurt - 10:58p Stefan - 11:38p Jefe - 2:35a Chris - 3:55a
They are all together right now, destroying food at Los Hermanos. Awesome.
They are also looking for a ride back to Tucson. I may head up there soon to ride a bit of singletrack and take them back to Tucson.

Max got an early start, leaving Oracle at about 3am. That should set him up for a finish well before sunset. Strong work, Max. Unfortunately he may have forgot to reset his SPOT (they go out of tracking mode every 24 hours). His last point was 5-6 hours ago. No doubt he plans to burn it to the finish, with his eyes set on beating Chad's time from last week. Rob caught some more sleep (remember he had arrived in Oracle later), but still got a good start, rolling around 7am. He'll be racing to get as much done before it gets dark, and will probably finish shortly after sunset. It'll be fun to see how it plays out for him. Fred (no SPOT tracker) is somewhere in the mix there too, possibly with Max, or perhaps thereafter. Marshal also got an early start, ~4am or so, leaving Prison Camp to climb the Mt. Lemmon highway in the dark. He's over the hump and battling it out on Oracle Ridge right now. I'm excited to see him still riding. He was worried that a recent back injury might prevent him from riding the full distance. If he makes it through Oracle Ridge (the worst hike-a-bike), he should finish. It looks like another nice day. A little warmer than yesterday, for sure, and warm enough that they'll feel it out there by Antelope Peak, but not prohibitively hot. Go guys go!

SS, rigid, and no spare cogs/rings. 32x20 I believe (29er). Same gear as Chad. Very impressive, especially the rigid part. Makes my hands ache just thinking about it....

Man this has been such a great race! There are a few of us that are stoked to try an attempt in the fall. I don't know what was more exciting, watching the SPOT or Paris-Roubaix yesterday. What a great weekend!
To those others who are still out there, keep it up! We're cheering you on just as hard!

S.S. and rigid. Impressive indeed! Did not know Chad did it SS. Way to go everyone!
Looking forward to doing the azt300 again. But this year I am hitting up the Trans Utah during late-summer/fall. Thanks for the cool race tracking. I've been following it all weekend.

Wow. I just caught up on all the weekend happenings. I can't believe this race already has a winner and at least two other finishers. Way to rock it!
Good luck to everyone still out there. And great work on the commentary.
