Jeff I think most racers carry tasty water from K-camp spigot to spigot at La Sevilla.
The reason I asked about Duck Tank is I am guessing that at 100 miles I might be ready to camp and I prefer to camp near a water source. But maybe my first night will be near Kentucky Camp (75 miles)  and maybe I will get to La Sevilla.(115 miles) It is hard to know as a rookie. I usually 'overplan' the first 24-48 hours and then just wing it from there. It seems that surviving the first 24 hours is key on this course. Thanks!!

The 15 miles or so after Kentucky Camp are a bit of work, ups & downs with perhaps a HAB or three tossed in. As soon as you exit the hills around the Santa Ritas it's super fun singletrack all the way to I-10 & beyond. A few short techy bits, then there's the options to go 0.25 mile off route to the La Posta Quemada ranch for a burrito & drinks or stay the course on the AZT to La Sevilla CG a few more miles down the trail. Just take a little extra water from Kentucky Camp and call it good.

Jeff,  Not sure the mile marker (110ish), but you can filter from the little creek at I think La Cienega. You have to drop down to the water rather than ride across the frontage road but a reliable source.

Scott M.,  Someone had asked about snow, and you had mentioned the "regular snow detour" north of the rim.  If necessary, what is that route?

The only "tank" that I know of that has in the past held water clean enough to filter is "The Lake" above "Twin Tanks" just north of the AZT after the trail leaves the National Forest.

Once your down there keep going down the trail in the wash briefly and then a contour trail to climb back out, it's always ok to ride more of the AZT you'll rejoin the course north of the bridge at Marsh Station Rd. There is always water down there, other then passing thru on the AZT your supposed to have a permit from the county to hang out down there birding and such. It's a joke seeing as there are regular vehicle incursions. It's super lush down there really a sweet scenic section of the official trail the the course misses.

Like, "how do I get to Parker Lake?" there's some questions I won't answer and I doubt Scott will either. I'll give you a hint: if the trail is covered in snow there's only one Plowed route out of there. Just messing with ya http://topofusion.com/azt/gpx/

I wouldn't count on reception at Stateline, but Verizon is pretty good here in the AZ wilds. I would think Jacob Lake is your best bet for reliable service.

No ATT in Jacob Lake. The locals say Verizon works nearby IIRC. ATT works at south rim, for a split second in canyon near cottonwood, and then 1.5 miles above finish at start of final DH (always). It kind of works at the finish line but not reliable unless you are up the hill a bit. Your best bet past the south rim to organize a ride is to bring a calling card or quarters and use the pay phone at the general store near the Park entrance leaving the park on the snow detour (highway). It is closed for the season but has a pay phone outside that worked in 2014. The pay phone in the canyon at phantom ranch was broken last year. The pay phone at Jacob Lake was removed last year. Also, Jacob Lake had no public wifi, so no cool wifi texting action either.

Am I stupid to be considering an ITT in early June? Way too hot? I get off crutches the beginning of May and figure if I am super lucky and PT goes really well I could at least make my way through the 300 and go farther if the leg feels well.

Anyone here done a thru ride in June? Would you do it again?

IF u started at 6pm, rode all night, slept from 11-4 in the day, and did that until roosevelt lake, you would be fine.

That sounds like a hard plan to follow though.

June is the hottest driest month of the year, could it be done sure but it wouldn't be pleasant. For someone who rides here in the heat and kept riding as temps increased you can ride in the full heat, if you pace yourself and get lucky and rehydrate and recover well. Otherwise people do die here, people from out of state usually. People who are fit enough to get into trouble sometimes. A week or two of acclimation would do wonders I'd bet.

June is the time to do the Kaibab http://www.bikepacking.net/routes/kaibab-monstercross/ The Coco 250 has been done by a Tucson rider in June. All the AZT from North of Flag South to the Rim above Payson is good. Mt Lemmon is sweet but that's an overnighter at best.

You don't sleep in the desert past 7:00am. It's to hot. Snakes are bad at night. You'll use twice as much water. It would be difficult for someone that's 100% sound and lives here and rides all the time in the heat. It's a bad idea. Stupid seems critical but not smart.
