Hi all,

first time doing this, should be fun.

i have a preliminary shuttle set up to get to the start on the evening of the 6th, but would be way more convenient if anyone else had room for one more?  or is there a good for-hire (cheapish) shuttle option I could look into?

Ive seen multiple answers so figured id ask here. What time does the 300 party roll out from PCL on the 7th?

I made it much more conspicuous, on the main race site:

http://topofusion.com/azt/race.php

300 Start: 8:00am Parker Canyon Lake
750 Start: 7:00am Mexican Border

Thanks for the question.

The lowercase 'dw' yellow dot is on the move after an early start from the Utah border!  He's nearing Jacob Lake already.  I'll be watching intently to see how the journey to the Canyon's edge goes for him.

Fingers crossed.

Go Wicks!

One more note -- deadline for SPOT Gen3 rentals is coming up in a few days (March 31).  Please get signed up if you need one.  I'm having the units shipped early to me, in Patagonia, since I'm on the move these days.

Ha.  Running from temperatures we deem unsatisfactory or the *slightest* bit uncomfortable.  Give us 70's!

Coming on 2.5 hours since he arrived in Jacob Lake.  Not looking promising for what he heard/saw there.

Ha.

This just in from Dave:

67 - its closed. Not just closed but a firm it's closed. The adot told me while standing at the gate. Cited 67 is not ploughed and it's closed. I offered no info (re aztr 750) and I did not push the issue. I did not want to stuff it up for nobo riders.  There seemed to be a few adot utilities trucks around the place or maybe just one guy do a lot of driving and no work.

I asked around (to verify) and it appears there is still 3-4 feet of snow up on the top of 67 but they are expecting it to melt in the next couple of weeks with all the hot weather they are having

Hope this helps in some way.

Excellent recon, Dave, thanks.

Bummer for Dave.  The forecast has winds from north at 20+ mph so he would have made great time to the rim if surface conditions were rideable!

So, where does that leave things for fast-ish riders starting on 7th?  Anyone feeling confident that 67 will be open by +/- 15th ??

I have snowshoes, but hoping I don't need them.
Will carry them if the north rim continues to get more snow or low temps.

The road being "closed" doesn't concern me.  My understanding is that a backcountry permit is required, but maybe someone with more GC experience can chime in.  Still plenty of days of beautiful AZ to melt the snow.  I'm not stressing about it.

"Even though it is not possible to drive vehicles to the North Rim during the winter, hikers, snowshoers and cross country skiers are able to enter the North Rim of the park through the winter months, provided backcountry permits have been obtained. Personal snowmobiles are not permitted inside the park. The North Rim reopens on May 15 of every year."

Its gonna be a narrow window of opportunity between a mid/late April snow-free 67 and the April 28th government shutdown. Wink

how crusty is the snow at night?
can you stick to the regular off-highway trail and ride around the ADOT?

and again what a bummer for Dave.  Last year he was just a down wrapped burrito in the blizzard.

I would think snowshoes and a lightweight plastic sled to put your bike and gear on would be the way to go.

Don't blame the Nanny. Get a backcountry permit per Grand Canyon website and there doesn't seem to be an issue for shoeshine, ski, hike, sled for access on the North Rim.

To snowshoe to Jacob Lake from the North rim might take two days. That's two days extra food  you will need to carry with you through the canyon. Yikes!

Hoping there is a big melt between now and then.

Rhino - no delays in getting that - they don't have to mail it or something equally silly?  Could be picked up online in Flagstaff, for instance, if Kaibab Plateau was still snowed under when each of us starts to get close?

LSB - I'm no GC expert, so I can't answer that. I'm just good at reading their website, following their rules, and working around the system. I haven't had a BC permit at GC for years. My plan is to just stand in line at the Permit counter at the south rim.

I'm really counting on a massive snow melt. Which might be really bad for the North Kaibab trail...
