Sure hope Cjell rides out of the fog and appears near Utah soon!
Did Blake bail after making the rim? Hard to believe at this point in the race, but it looks like he's on the road & off course?

Is there an alternate route using Hwy 67 from the north rim to Jacob's Well, then to HWY 89A where it intersects back up with AZT? Did anyone else notice they are off trail...both Blake and Max took the road rather than the trail. And now Aaron is doing the same thing.

I believe the highway is an approved alternate if snow prevents use of the trail. |

That's correct. The highway from the north rim to Jacob Lake is an allowed detour from the AZT. I should probably just make the tracker line show the pavement instead.

It was going to be my entertainment for the next week too!  I got tired of continuously riding the line between nausea and bonking, any time the trail requires significant effort (and when does it not?). I had an amazing night under a huge moon riding the Cienegas on through Colossal Cave and the Hope Camp stuff (new to me), so it was not all a loss. Failure isn't about falling down, failure is staying down. 750, I'll be back! Do you just have a bug or something, your'e way too strong and experienced for this to be a pacing issue or something like that. It's been so long since my stomach has given me problems, but I do remember those days of suffering through the last 8 hours of a 24 just being miserable, certainly not fun and I can understand not wanting to go another 6 days like that. I'm sure you will get it done in grand style, perhaps we will both have to wait for next year though. What's the next available time of year to do the entire route? Late Summer or early Fall? It would be kinda cool to do the whole route without the detour at the North Rim. |

I just got into Boise after drifting north (in a car) for a week. Was able to ride pieces of the route north of Pine and am sorry to have missed that part of the race. My knee is still screwed up so I'm glad I stopped at Roosevelt Lake. My barrel cactus thorn infected my hand and required antibiotics and surgery. Damn expensive cactus.
I was going to pick Cjell up at the border but he called from Phoenix saying that from the Gila to Picketpost almost did him in -- no food or water. He had no brake pads left so even downhill was a pisser. He has pulled out so don't bother looking for his remains on the side of Highline. I bet he comes back for more next year.
Amazing riding by all.

He said he zip tied it on, but the zip tie wore off and broke somewhere. He lost one of the two ratchets inside, so when he got to the north rim, he had a non-functional bike.
Luckily a couple from Provo had circumnavigated the road closed sign and gone to the north rim, so they picked him up and saved him a 40 mile road walk.
What a bummer to make it that far and then not have a working bike. He was flying out there!

I went out to the rim and caught Eric Foster as he was about to drop into the canyon (at the hottest part of the day). He said he was glad to be doing something other than riding his bike.
The last pic is a "Where's Waldo?" kind of image. Trust me, EF is there but very tiny.

Hey all, David Phillips here, new to the forums (post #1!), been lurking for a while, anxiously watching the AZT. What a trip! Congrats to AG, EH, and MM on the respective wins, and to everyone who even made it to the starting line. Commendable effort, every one!

Jefe, come on down for the 300 again next year. I'll race you! We can get Scott, Aaron, and whoever else we can round up. One of us is bound to have good luck and finally get in a clean run. The rest will be envious and have to come back in 2015. How bad of an idea is that? On a completely different note, Sheila just got the best birthday present I can think of - she finished the dang Highline Trail and found herself in the cool pines above the Mogollon Rim! Finished up the 750 around 10:30 this morning. I had a great time battling it out with Aaron. I'm so bummed that he had to submit to a mechanical. Look out for Aaron next year.
I'll follow up with a race report in a couple days. It's time for a cold beer and some much needed sleep.
