Looks really sharp. I really hope to be there this fall, but it will depend on my kids athletic schedules. Can you give me an idea of the distance/places that you traveled each day? Did you make it to or past Sturgis on the first day?

Looks like a great route, Jason! I have a few ties to South Dakota and the Black Hills so it would be fun to come and see this area via your Expedition Route. I'll keep this one on my radar. Great site, too!! |

looks tempting. time splits for sections can be taken from track leaders last year : http://trackleaders.com/blackhills14Dylan Taylor is a strong rider, so I can tell from his splits that this route must be fairly hard. |

By hitting the play button on last years race you can follow the racers and see where they stopped to rest. You can also control the speed of replay. Last year for the race we had very hot weather. It was close to 90 for the first 3 days. I made it just passed Sturgis the first day. The sun did kick my butt for sure. The average temp for that time of year is 73 degrees for Rapid City so I would guess between 63 and 73 for the hills. Freezing is possible up in the higher elevations at night.
Nice to meet Norb and Rick at the ATR last month. Yes, the ATR is Harder! That first 300 was very awesome desert riding, though all the cactus and sand washes. Still think about it every day. I would say the Black Hills route is 95 to 98 percent ride able. We do have a lot of smooth dirt trails but like every race we got some crappy rocky trails too. In Custer State Park on Horse Creek Trail you will push up one mile and down one mile.

Jason,
from looking at the route it appears that some shorter loops could be easily made, if one wanted to tour a shorter section is there an area that is better than the others? I.E. more scenic, access to water, less HAB etc. Many thanks

I just wanted to bring this back up. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will be passing through on my way to Montana in a few weeks and am looking for a shorter (1-2 day) ride. Thanks |

I noticed this area is big on the whole Sturgis thing during the bike rally, but does anyone know of a good cheap place to camp? I need to set up something short term I can use for postal and UPS shipping as I have to get some gear there and don't plan to bring a car. I'm leaving by bike and heading south west. I'd like to be able to tour parts of the route after the race until the weather starts to scare me off. If anyone is interested in racing with the grand depart and doing some riding and camping before or after let me know. This route looks amazing. Nice work to the people who put this together. (Jason?) I can't wait. Fat biking this. |

I stay at Chris' Campground each year in Spearfish. $50 a night fir a small cabin. Good people that I'm sure would accept your shipments for you.
Spearfish city campground is also nice for tent camping and closer to town. Maybe contact a local bike shop for a place to ship stuff.

Thinking of logistics it looks like there really aren't any resupply points after Hill City. Food can be carried so that isn't a big deal. How plentiful are opportunities to fill up with water on the back 1/3 of the route? From the map it looks like there are plenty of opportunities to filter from natural sources. Any services with food or potable water?
