Its on!

Durango to Denver this year.

Finally I'll get to cross the one off my lists of things I have to do a least once and get addicted to.

Yeah!  It's going to be a really fun year to watch.

Can't wait to get the party started.

Wx is looking classically monsoony -- and I can attest that here in Silverton it's rained nearly every day for some time.

Lot of familiar names and multi-time finishers...
Can't forget Aaron D.
and Chris P on the tandem.

Joe S and Brian H have multiple finishes. Felipe B has been out there a few times. Ned Bachanko sounds awfully familiar.. can't quite put my finger on it though. Lot of experience in this group.

Ahh the painful high altitude memories  icon_biggrin

Have fun out there everyone!

After a quiet and dry afternoon the monsoons finally kicked in around 6pm and I think just about everyone is now getting soaked.  Welcome to CTR!

Ned is setting a nice pace but he was not leading for some time.  Scott Simmons (not tracking, despite my best efforts) was setting the pace and was a few minutes ahead of Ned/Neil as of Indian Trail Ridge.

I happened to run into Ned while scouting for campsites here in Silverton and he said the trail was a "soupy, loamy mess."  And that was before it started raining.  He's in the lead now though.  He let Scott go not wanting to "burn matches early."

Really looking forward to watching this one play out.  Lot's of veterans in the mix and quite a few interesting rookies as well. And... a tandem!

Hope everyone is staying warm out there!

I remember the good ole days when there was a huge amount of posts going up about the race.
Any pics out there of the start.

true-not much chatter here. Or even on the facebook page. I saw a pic on Zach Guys instagram... In the story part that goes away.

So I ask.... how will the nice rest for the chasers will go against this "ned" guy. They recovered and dried out..... But "ned" is on road now. I think you can ride a lot faster when you recover some... We'll see, but it will take a day to see if they can catch up.

No, it's a psuedonym.

The evening was quite miserable ... tough timing with heavy rain picking up before sunset and continuing to 10pm.  No one wanted to leave Silverton but Ned, and it paid off for him with a big lead.

Eszter shot photos of folks up on Indian Trail Ridge.  I'll see if I can get her to post some here.  I think a Herald article is coming as well as bikepacking.com.

The race is back on with a beautiful sunny morning.  Riders will do well to get as far *east* as possible, as far out of the monsoon SW flow as they can.  It's looking like 100% chance rain here in Silverton this afternoon, probably heavy.  It's looking like one of those years where it pays to be fast, or pays to not sleep night 1.  We shall see!

Here's the Herald article with a few nice photos, including one of our hero and RD.

He hasn't led the race (yet) otherwise the article is good!

I finished a west bound ITT a few days ago in just under 11 days race time.  Had a great time, though not much time to acclimate to elevation meant I was pretty worked by sunset or so each day.  Rode late a few times but mostly rode an hour or so past dark and going by 7am ish.  Had storms going up Searle, next day in Leadville and again at Mt Elbert TH, and then really bad storms by Celebration Lake and Kennebec pass.

I went with an Old man mountain rack on my Transition spur since that bike can't fit a seat bag of any size.  The rack itself was very solid.  Packing a bag onto it was more problematic as it always wanted to shift forward or back, and any part that hung over the front or back of the rack would bounce around.  Still need to work on that, likely I'll try to get some better bosses installed to strap down the load.  Bike performed great, no mechanicals until the final descent when I bent the front rotor hitting a rock in a swollen creek crossing.

Best of luck to everyone out there racing!

Flew from Durango to Denver then took metro to Littleton and rode bike paths to the start at Waterton Cyn.  Started at 6pm on a Saturday

Nice ride up Waterton Cyn.  I rode Segment 1 and did the 1800ft climb out of the river on Seg2 before calling it a night around midnight.

Day 2 was finishing Seg2/3 and most of the 70 mile road detour around the Lost Lake wilderness.  As far as roads go it was pretty scenic

Day 3, got back on the CT and climbed up and over Georgia pass ending in Breck by dark

Day 4 was the climb over 10mile range to Copper and then climbed towards Searle before an incoming storm stopped progress before dark

Day 5, rolling by 430am to get up and over Searle and Kokomo before storms resumed in the morning.  Rained on from Hwy 24 into Leadville and then again from Mt elbert TH for a couple hrs.  Then got nice as I passed Twin Lakes.

Day 6, drop down into Buena Vista, resupply and then up to Cottonwood pass, over to and beyond Mt Princeton hot springs.

Day 7, cross Hwy 50 and up Fooses in the rain to Monarch crest, nice double rainbow the reward up top.  Then drop down shitty moto trails which make up the CT in this area.

Day 8, connect over Sargents Mesa, obviously my favorite part of the route so far.  30+ miles of mostly thrashed moto trail and then onto the 70 mi La Garita wilderness detour.  Ended the day with 20ish miles of cool forest road riding by moonlight

Day 9, lots of La Garita road detour left. Nicer scenery but it was a tough grind.  Up to Spring Creek pass and back to CT.  Made it over Jarosa Mesa before dark.

Day 10, ok 2 shots for this day.  Started 430am, up to high ridge for sunset and then up and over high point on the CT at 13,278ft.

Day 10, continued over high point to Cataract lake and onwards to Stony Pass before dropping down to Silverton for dinner.  Up Hwy 550 to Molas pass and a few miles beyond before finding camp

Day 11, got hammered by a brutal electrical storm near Celebration Lake.  Things cleared up and I continued past Blackhawk pass, camping at top of Corral Draw

(Calendar) Day 12, up and over Indian Trail ridge.  Got hit by another bad storm just cresting Kennebec pass.  Rain down to the start of the climb to High Pt.

Finished just before 6pm for sub 11 day time.  Beer me!

Yep, good old Ned from Icculus.

Rain has started in Silverton (1pm).  Nothing serious yet but there's a lot of moisture available in the atmosphere.  In the morning the sun was shining bright and warm enough to lift everyone's spirits and fully dry most gear out.

We have an excellent women's race this year.  Any one of them could take it as pacing has been similar among the top 4 or 5.  That's exciting to see.  In the men it's a race for 2nd barring disaster for Nedly.

Love that you used an Old Man rack - old school. I used one of those on some of my first bikepacking rides before the rackless stuff became ubiquitous.

Great ride and thanks for the pics!

With the reported wet mess out their Neil, er Ned, is blazing.  He's right about 2 hours off the record pace at Cochetopa Park and he could pull all that back and then some if he gets some better luck with the skies.  My buddy Nate is giving a good run leading the big chase group down the long detour to Dome Lakes.  Lots of strong motivation folks out there this year!

Nice job and pics Evdog! And Ez as always!

2nd place... 6 guys within 10 miles of each other if i did the math right? That should be exciting to watch.

And Ned is about 40 mi up. But the pack of 6 is on fast road vs rocky trail so they should be able to get a little closer. Ned had knee issues in past and anything could go wrong. Hope if he gets caught is just due to others being stronger and not injury. They are all awesome riders and people! I first met many on this trail at one time or another.

My point spread for 2nd... Jefe is crazy good at this but only one gear... Jeff K really wants to finish this. Zach Guy....That guy is funny as hell and fast. The rest also very fast. Who can ride all night and keep up the pace? Too close to call!  Keep pedaling circles and rubber down!
