Starting a new thread to discuss the CSTR for 2015.

Sean's website is here with excellent maps and some info: http://www.californiasierratrailrace.com/

The 2015 version is reportedly beginning July 17th in Auburn at 7:00 am. Probably in the Raley's parking lot.

The area west and south of hell hole reservoir was affected pretty badly by the fires last summer so the route may change in, around or near this area.

Major thanks are owed to Sean Allan for setting this up, it's a massive route and huge challenge to consider entering this race, let alone organising it.

Working this weekend on the route and website. Should be very close by the end of the weekend. I'm still looking for some input around the Truckee area but that will be the final piece. Looking forward to actually racing this year as well.

How's the reroute looking? Did it end up adding or subtracting mileage/vert? With how little snow you guys got this year I bet it will be rideable super early and maybe the lack of moisture will even keep the mosquito population lower than some years (a guy can dream at least)...

The route is looking just fine. I'm hesitant to put it up in it's entirety until I ride another section that is still under snow in the Truckee area. I have a Strava file of it, but it's got a little drift to it so I'd like to tighten that up a bit before it goes public.

The route is definitely easier and will be a loop as opposed to the previous version which shared some tracks on the inbound and outbound sections. We lost some nice trail in the fire last year so those had to be abandoned. The route picked up some dirt road and lost a ton of the HAB. I haven't really put a lot of thought into it, but the route might be up in the 95-98% rideable.

Mileage is nearly identical and climbing is pretty close to prior versions, although it is easier climbing and nearly all rideable.

Re-supply is still very good, with the push from Lake Tahoe to Foresthill still being the longest stretch without supplies, about 90 miles of hard riding. With the record dry years(s) we've been having water might be an issue in a few sections up on the Tahoe Rim Trail, but nothing to be too worried about. The route passes through major rivers and lakes for nearly all of it.

It will still be a great route, probably a bit more doable to a larger percent of riders, but still right up there in difficulty with some of the other routes in CO and AZ.

I'll have the GPX up at 3 months out regardless of accuracy, just so folks have an idea of what they are looking at.

Finally finished putting together this short video about last summer's race.

California Sierra Trail Race
from Aaron Johnson on Vimeo

Keep in mind - this video describes the previous route, which is different than this year's route - Sean had to make some changes due to last summer's fires destroying some of the trails. Bummer, but the new route should be awesome too!

Another great video.  Seeing those trails again brings back great memories from my fall tour of the route.  That was a tough loop!  I'm sure the new route is awesome too.

Awesome video, Aaron! Thanks for putting that together. It really makes me want to come out and explore in the Sierra. Perhaps in June!

Loved the video and blogs. Pretty hooked on riding this, but not sure that I am going to (cough, "can") race it. What's the best season to be out there and riding this route?

Obviously Aaron and I have communicated about the video but I wanted to express what a great job he did. As usual with his stuff, it's a really good representation of what he experienced on his journey. Thanks again!

New course is up on the site today. Should be pretty close. I'm considering a few options in the area between Truckee and Lake Tahoe so that may change a little as I ride some of that stuff in the next month, so don't use the current track on race day. It won't add much mileage or elevation gain, likely under 1000'. It will be good enough for planning sake though.

The track on your site is still labeled "2014". Is that right?

I tried the route file in Garmin Connect and RWGPS and could not get it to work. In RWGPS it downloaded as a 16 different routes,  any help?

I don't use either of those programs, though I'm  sure the file is too large to import into GC. I'll  add a 10000 point track tonight and you can try again. I'm away from my computer but it is likely 16 files merged together so that's  what you're  seeing. You really should have Topofusion or Basecamp to properly and easily work with files this large, it will make getting the route into your GPS easier as well. Try the 10000 point track and let me know if that helps, if not we'll work something out for you.

Hi,
Maybe this will help: I joined all tracks into 1 route and put them here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/7767424

There is one slightly odd section near Tahoe City (mile 125), which I am sure Sean will fix in some future release.

Regards,
