Hi guys,

After injury prevented me from riding the Tour Divide this year, I'm turning my sights to the 2014 edition. I was wondering if anyone had any information on the state of the Canadian section of the GDMBR? I know that most of the trails through that section are remote and not frequently used, meaning that they would understandably be low priority for repair, particularly given the amount of rebuilding that the Alberta authorities are faced with.

If the damage is as substantial as the few reports I've managed to find suggest it is, is there a possibility of the Tour Divide running from the US border in 2014? Would a re-route through Canada be on the cards? Or will the trails be up and running in some form (singletrack?) by the time the 2014 TD starts. It'd be a shame not to be able to ride the full route, but I'll (hopefully) be lining up whatever option the race takes next year.

Happy trails,

Ed

In conjunction to this post I emailed the Adventure Cycling Association, asking whether they had any plans to re-evaluate their route. I know that the ACA route has long been the one that the Tour Divide has followed, so assumed that any plans they had would be a good indicator of a likely 2014 TD route. I received the following response from Melissa of the ACA Cartography Department:

Hi Ed,

Right now there is no plan to reroute the Canadian section.  From reports, there are 2 bridges out that riders seem to be having trouble with - one about 40 km north of Elkford, and one in between Elkford and Sparwood. Other than that, riders have been able to make it through most of the route, managing a few river crossings that seem do-able as long as the water is not really high. We will re-evaluate the need to reroute at our next map printing for this route.  Until then, you can follow updates from us and riders on the road at this forum topic in our Temporary Road Closures forum: http://forums.adventurecycling.org/index.php?topic=11764.new;topicseen#new

Although this email is vague on specifics, it looks like riders are having to detour around two bridges, while other rivers are fordable. On the back of this, my original question about the state of the trails seems to have been answered; it remains to be seen what detour the Tour Divide race organizers (if that term is applicable / appropriate) will post, if any.

To shed a little more light. I know a guy who started in Banff in August I think and rode the entire thing. He has some awesome river crossing pictures and said it never really got too sketchy. You just had to be a little careful crossing the rivers.

So pack a snorkel or swim trunks?

Either way, I hope the full thing is on by next summer :/
