Just wondering how many people are thinking about doing the AES Coco 250 next month? Figured I would start the thread since it is coming up.

Coconino! A few have expressed interest on the AES page: http://rockyroad5050.wordpress.com/5-coconino-250-and-350But so far it seems like it'll be a fairly small event. A bit of a shame since it is such an incredibly fun loop (in my very biased opinion). It's been a few years since I've been able to participate, so I'm hoping to come ride. Not sure how CDT recovery (both physical and mental) will go, or if I'll be in the mood, but it sounds appealing to me right now. |

My wife and I are looking forward to FINALLY doing this loop. Just hope the weather holds out.
Anxious to see if Mingus is "all that".

I am in for Coconino. Can't wait. New to bikepacking. I'll be the guy with to much gear and no clue how to use it. Will be a lot of fun. If you do see me out there doing something stupid don't be afraid to tell me. Good news is I rode some miles on AZT this weekend. And only got lost twice. I know it sounds bad but it's actually an improvement. See everyone out there.

Oh, it's all that and more. You'll love your SS for the all the HAB -- it'll be so light to push! As for the stupid steep and endless dirt road that is rideable in granny ring.... sucks to be you! It hadn't occurred to me that you guys haven't ridden Coco yet. It's a classic. I think you'll love it, while also making sure that both Chad and I don't need ear warmers, no matter how cold it gets.  |

Is GPS a must on this route? I never use it, but it seems like this could be a challenging route to run off cue sheets. Any advice?
I'm trying to figure out what stuff I would need to pull together a last minute trip.

I'd highly recommend one. A few people have done it on cues alone, but it's not easy. A lot of it is straightforward, but you'll be glad you have a track to look at for the confusing/unsigned parts. |

Also, to successfully do the stage race timing, you need the waypoints so you know where the timing starts/ends. |

I'm in for another! Great loop and such a fun time. No ITT for me this year...wanna enjoy the "off the clock time". Not many of these silly things where we can race and socialize for 3-4 days straight. Too bad beer sherpa Mark Allen isn't riding this year...that dude schlepped a 12pack of coors from Munds in 2012...
I was planning on stashing a cooler of beer, cigarettes and pot brownies at camp #1, any issue with that? lol...

Having toured most of this route already, I can say this a great loop. It is almost entirely real mountain biking and very little pavement. I would very much like to come out for this year (not sure if I really need to do Mingus again though). Its going to be a last minute decision for me though due to my work and wife. I'm 50/50 at this point. Stashing intoxicants at the first night campground site sounds like a great idea!

Here goes the new guy again... What is everyone taking for gear? Tent, jetboil, dehydrated food? I bought all this stuff and now not sure if I need half of it. Not to mention it's heavy. I have been riding with 2.5L of water in frane bag and up to 3L in my osprey. Does that sound like to much for this ride? Any advice will help. Can't wait.

Wyattt...minimize weight...pushing a 50+ lb bike up Mingus and Bill Williams blows bad. Personally, I ditch the stove...plenty of resupply on this route and you can do without that stuff. Lots of water too although you'll want to fill up in Cottonwood and at the Verde.
