Ok so did some more recon this weekend. I rode from Sprink Creek Pass to Wager Gulch, segment 22 I believe. Ok so again lots of high altitude trail. Spring Creek Pass is like 10,899 or close, that's the low piont!!! This segment contains the CT high point, coney's, 13,200. So the trail and jeep go from steep and ridable to mellow and no trail at all and big rocks everywhere. It is gonna open some eyes for sure, the crazy thing is going from this to segment 23 which is possibly worse/harder, the whole time I was out there, I was thinking, man this is gonna be very interesting at mile 350+. If you have any juice in the tank this will drain it, no doubt. Ok that's my report, feel free to ask questions while it's fresh in my mind oh I would guess segment 22 will take 5-7 hours easily, with no long breaks or naps. Coolio Jefe

What you don't like my honest reports??? Hahaha. Well you will be the one with his ears burning as folks get to mile 350 and hit perhaps the hardest section, hahaha, I love it but it is gonna be slow and painful and so hard to go fast, kinda like life sometimes....oh well,I don't mean to scare anyone at all, please come and see these awesome places, it is trully amazing up there, but it is gonna hurt and make some want to quit, so put that in your head, prepare, bring something fun and rewarding to keep you positive, be ready to hike your bike, remember to look around and see what so few get to see, a place so seldom traversed, much less on a MTB, so yeah it is gonna be awesome!!! Peace Jefe

Cat,
I was on my way back to the Waterton trailhead on top of segment one where the old dirtbike trail crosses (only a few miles from lenny's rest).

Heh, heh.  I'm totally jesting.  If folks haven't realized the severity (and beauty!) of those two segments by now, they must be blind, deaf *and* dumb!

One thing that may have gone unnoticed though is the small piece of tundra CTRers are requested to walk down.  Please revisit this page if you haven't:  http://www.bearcreeksurvey.com/CTRMaps.htm

Yeah, there is NO Trail there at all, it is a pretty steep grade as well, I wouldn't ride it either way, just follow the cairns is my advice up there, they will take you in the right direction, that goes for the whole 22-23 segments, follow the cairns as there is very little trail in quite a few places, man I am getting twitchy with excitement!!! Peace Jefe

I'm also in.

Coming out from Illinois, can't wait.  We skipped segments 22 & 23 during our first tour, we were too tired, and we even started in Durango Smiley

Has anyone been able to track down the new data book (4th Edition)?  I've had one on order for close to 6 weeks, but it's a no show.  Also, all the outdoor/book stores only seem to have the 3rd edition still.

I ordered one from the Colorado Trail Store (http://www.coloradotrail.org/store.html), and it showed up in about a week.  Maybe they are backordered, but I'd call 'em up and ask what happened to your order.  That's probably the most valuable resource to bring with you on the CTR.

I ordered my straight from the Colorado Trail Store and arrived within a few days.  If anyone wants to borrow mine I'd be happy to loan it.   BTW, here's my first CT try from 7/6-7/12: http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=540293

Due to knee issues and my overall slowness, I have decided that I will be starting Sunday morning with everyone but will not be racing.  I will be taking my time and be making an extended trip out of it.  Good luck to all of you.  Hopefully, I will be recovered from impending knee surgery well enough to participate in the 2010.  Well, see you there (but only for a few minutes when you all blow past me). wave

P.S.
Cat, Good meeting you up on the trail this last weekend.  Good luck to you.

CTR pre-race meeting(s):

1.) Vine Street Pub, Denver.  (17th & Vine)  Friday @ 5:30pm.  Coincides with Fixie Dave's B-day celebration.
2.) Chipotle, Boulder.  (1650 28th Street)  Saturday @ 5:00pm.  Early so we can all get some sleep.

I (and likely some other CTR veterans) will be at both to answer any questions about the route or rules.  I will also bring the SPOT units to get as many handed out in advance before Sunday morning.  Anyone borrowing a SPOT will need to provide 2 Lithium AA batteries to run the unit on.

In the meantime, have a gander at the rules FAQ.

http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/ctr_rules.html

I'd hate to have issues like TD has had this year because someone doesn't follow the CTR course correctly.  Please study the course and know it (especially where to start the detours!!!) like the back of your hand.  Or better...

Hello all, I'm in this year. I hope there are enough spots to go around. I just read the rule page and the #2 rule about using trees for shelter was probably brought up by my performance last year. I just want everyone to know that it was not my intention to do that. I thought I could make the last bit without sleeping. I could not. So I did that, as I was frozen. Better form this year. See you all soon. Anybody have room for a passenger from Gunny area to denver?

Cat, check out the 1st page of this thread.

Ethan!  Great to have you back for 3-in-a-row!  Yes, the #2 on my "tread lightly" points was brought up based on the article I read in Mountain Flyer.  I realize and understand that it wasn't your intention to have to do that, but I felt I needed to post so other people don't plan on it.  I'm glad you're taking that point in stride, as it certainly wasn't meant to be personal.  Good luck again this year!

From chuckyb!! Thanks, man!

We'll have a twitter feed this year, both for racers and spectators.  Racers
can twt the trials, tribulations, pictures, GPS coordinates, locations, etc
direct from their mobiles if desired (all other avenues of communication
remain the same).  Also, if you would like to follow the leader board and
chat going on around the event you'll be able to get that as an RSS or Twt
as well.

CTR3 racers with Twitter account:

Send your twitter name to cbray123@gmail.com and Chuck will 'follow' all of
you (via bikepkr2),  that stream will be fed to the leader
board page.  If you do not have an account set one up at
http://twitter.com/, verify your mobile so that the SMS txt messages you
send to 40404 will go to your account .. and be picked up by bikepkr2.  (If
you use a smartphone such as iPhone Blackberry etc, I've found the
twitterific app to be good, it automatically turns photos into tiny url and
also grabs gps coordinates off the phone if you have an embedded chip).

Spectators or racers who desire to follow the leader board via Twitter:

Search for bikepkr on your twitter account and 'follow'.  This will be the
leader board RSS feed so should be the single source of all information.

All chat should use the hashtag convention so that our conversation is
searchable #CTR3, it can be placed anywhere in the message and easily
forwarded and referenced by all twitter users. "tweeples" or my preferred
"twiggas"!
