Jeff, I've talked with you at the start of one or two of the NUE 100s. I've been following the CTR with great interest. Doing the NUE races is one thing, but you guys (gals included) doing this race are the HARD Folks of cycling. Sounds like you made the right decision to pull the plug, hard as it might have been to do so, and that's without seeing pictures of the battle scars.
Great effort. I'm looking forward to following next year's race already.

Jeff, that was a fantastic effort. I'm really sorry to hear you can't continue, it was absolutely riveting to watch you and Ethan going back and forth yesterday. dawn, Eszter is a machine. She had never even done a 24 hour enduro before last year when she elected to do 24 hours of Moab. Despite her rookie status she just kept turning lap after lap at the same time splits for the entire duration, and remained surprisingly chipper, even at 3AM when the rest of us in the support crew were utter zombies. I'm somewhat surprised she has elected to use her 29er hardtail for the CTR instead of the fully suspended bike she demanded Walt build for her immediately after Moab, although I guess it makes sense from the perspective of being able to carry more. Her exact words to us at Moab, somewhere around lap 6 or 7, were "please tell Walt I will sell him my firstborn child for a full suspension bike..." my fingers are crossed that she's not suffering from the same foot problems as Jeff, because it sounds like there's a really evil hike a bike that the next section of trail has in store. Her capacity for suffering is amazing, but this is uncharted territory for her.

Yes--I've followed her on her blog for a while now. Her tenacity really makes me think about what makes people keep going and keep trying. The whole mind over matter thing. It's glaringly obvious that she loves what she does. She loves riding bikes. Is it because she's so good at it? or is she so good at it because she loves it so much? Anyway. She inspires me.

Chris Miller called in from Buena Vista to pull the plug. He's looking for a ride to the front range so he can pick up his car and head to Durango. If you know anyone who might can help, leave a message on the comment line and I can give you his number. I beeped it from the audio for obvious reasons.

I am going to inform the Sportsman's that the next one of these races, they don't notify me until it's over.
As a parental unit I am getting ulcers and the manager is going to fire me for being glued to this site!!!
Gawd, these are all tough yahoos out there.

When K. Monty blew out his shock during the GDR a few years ago I decided to switch to a HT. I can say unequivocally that I'm yet to have any problems with my HT covering these races from my desk. One day..... :/

Cheers JP, sorry to hear that Chris is out, although he mentioned on the blog that his goal was to get to BV and decide at that point whether to push on if he felt he could make it within a week. It was really cool that he was racing with Eszter this go. If I knew of anyone in the BV area who could transport him back here to get his vehicle, we'd give him a jingle. I will send a note out to the gooney crew though I'm sure they're all eagerly monitoring the race as well.
Any word on Sean Allen? Looks like he had to bail into Salida, hope it's not bike trouble related :S

I think JenyJo is going to take care of Chris Miller though I'm not 100% on that. Bummer you had to pull JK, impressive effort though! CTR isn't as bumpy as 24 Hrs of Moab. All those square edged rocks in MOab are a beating. I didn't think most of the CTR was bad on a rigid SS 26er but I know I'm just as nutty as these folks

CTR isn't as bumpy as 24 Hrs of Moab. Chris clearly has a case of "selective memory" here... Aside from Nosedive & Upchuck, how many times did you have to walk your bike on the 24 HoM course because it was too bumpy? Of course, a 24 hour lap race is a completely different animal than the CTR. I didn't think most of the CTR was bad on a rigid SS 26er but I know I'm just as nutty as these folks. Yep, anyone who does the CTR on a rigid SS 26er is obviously nuttier than squirrel sh!t. And in 5d6h27m to boot?! Can't believe you had any nuts left after that...

Walking your bike is a break from the bumps! What was really stupid was doing it in Sidi's...oh man that hurt so bad.

Nathan Gallion called in from Leadville. Dillon Taylor called in from Buena Vista where he had some repairs done. Andy Farish called in from Buena Vista where he was re-supplying and getting some work done. Tim Kugler called in and he was about 20mi from 114. He is having Spot issues. Mark Caminiti called in from Buena Vista. Get them all here.

I think he was camped out at the bike shop in Frisco Tuesday night before making tracks from there all the way to Mt. Princeton Wednesday. Looks like he is at the bike shop in Salida. Hope he can get the bike in order and back on the trail.

Watching this from VA and I think we are currently getting the storms that you guys had at the start. Crazy amount of rain here, 4+ inches so far this afternoon and all the racers are animals for even starting this even without the weather. Makes my goal of the C&O canal with hotel stays seem pretty sad..

Ran into Bob Butrico at Twin Lakes this afternoon, he was in great spirits and having a great time. He was very glad he decided to carry a small tent and stove. Got to ride with him for a few miles, and he could not be having any more fun.

Ryan called in from Leadville about 4 pm this afternoon. We reviewed the directions for the Spot Tracker, which he said agreed with the directions given at the start, and was what he had been doing. The two blinking lights stay on for about 5 minutes. Any other thoughts on how to fix the problem? He will call in from Buena Vista tomorrow. It would be nice to have more than a couple of updates a day as he heads into the later isolated sections.
He was also interested in getting in touch with Ed T, who had been at Janet's Cabin earlier this week. Ed if you get this, drop me a personal message and I'll relay contact info to Ryan when he calls in tomorrow.
