Why not just have the race route return to following the official CT route?  I know riding through the Burn can be challenging but you get no highway at all.
Isn't the 285 detour necessary to bypass the Lost Creek Wilderness section? I haven't ridden up there, but I recall that one racer missed the turn and ended up at a wilderness sign before turning around. Am I missing something?
CTR '07 & '08 rode the Tarryall Detour around LCW.  It goes left at Wellington Lake Road instead of right.  The actual CT simply crosses the road and continues up into the LCW.  The Tarryall detour is maybe 70ish miles of dirt roads.  Riding through the burn is definitely not "challenging" compared to the rest of the CTR course.  "Boring" is a much better word choice for all the of the Wilderness detours...

I'm not sure that I was "bored" during the collegiate peaks wilderness detour.. spinning a 32x22 at 140+rpm in a driving rainstorm at night was enough to keep me warm

Thanks Stefan. I'm game to go either way next year. I generally prefer low-speed gravel to RV-choked pavement. I haven't ridden Tarryall, so I don't have an opinion on which is better--but I'm more than happy to trust your judgment since it seems to have worked out this year. Smiley

Hi Toby - It was great fun to watch your race unfold.  We were talking to you & others at the bridge on the Platte just after you finished Segment 1.

The "official" CT detour around Lost Creek heads left/southeast from 560 where you guys turned to the right to ride towards Bailey.  It goes by Wellington Lake, over Stony Pass, into the burn, and into Tarryall. From 5 or 6 miles before Tarryall there's a pretty long paved section from there to where you tie back into the dirt road and then the CT, but it's secondary road and in my experience, pretty tame traffic even on weekends.  It's a long detour and fairly uninspiring.

And by challenging, I meant in the heat.  Riding through the burn can be one long & very exposed sunbathing session.  Wouldn't have been a problem this year.

Looks like I'll have to give that a ride sometime, just to see what it's all about. I agree with that the detours are all boring compared to the rest of the race (I like my gears, Sportsman!), but I must admit that they did provide a little welcome respite from my butt chafe. I'd love to ride the wilderness sections, but I doubt that they will ever be open to bikes. I suppose that I'll just have to settle for backpacking them sometime--which will give me time to relish them that much more.

WELL DONE RYAN! thumbsup

It kind of looks like this, but be advised we didn't take many pictures of the burn ugliness which is the majority of the detour.

Ryan phoned in from Durango, way to go Ryan!  His next stop was a Mongolian buffet.  He'll be coming home via Greyhound unless anyone is still in the area and Denver-bound.
The 2nd day from Silverton, which showed only a little progress, involved a missed turn, a blown sidewall which could not be repaired, and a trek to Purgatory for a replacement (and an overpriced sandwich) before grinding back to the CT.
Good job Ryan!

All, I found an armwarmer at the Marshall Pass cabin.  Black with a couple stitchlines that are white or silver.  Let me know if it's yours and I'll put it in the mail.  Sorry so long to post this, hopefully it can be reunited with its owner.

Congratulations Ryan!  Way to stick with it.  Does this mean he is the "Ramstrong"  Award finisher?

Great job finishing up, Ryan.  Hiking 17 miles to get a replacement tire, then riding back to get on course is icing on the cake, and truly in the spirit of this self-supported event.  Love it!  I'm sure you weren't loving it that day, but it does make for a good story now.   Wink

This link was posted earlier but since the thread got long some people might have missed it.  Great interview with Stefan by Colorado NPR about the race.  My wife said she heard it live and I've enjoyed listening to it a couple of times.

If we're doing lost and found, I might as well mention that I never found my Spot, which was lost in the middle of section 14.

Way to go Ryan!! I had a similar experience this year at the AZT 750- I rode about the same 35 detour to get a tube, but you did it in the San Juans, which is off the charts sicktar.

I think I know where you missed a turn too- and that was not fun to get back to the CT I bet.

The CTR is complete. But it is never really over for the finishers/racers. Cherish these moments and memories folks. This is special stuff going on here.
