Out and back Solves some problems, but leaves 470+/- others.

Hi all: I can't get this out of my system, so I'm gonna do the race again! I think about the trail alot....and how I wanna be out there... Wanted to do Durango to Denver last year, but didn't happen. As the last "official" finisher from 2010, here are my thoughts: 1) It's gonna be one heck-of-a climb to Kennebec Pass. A good warm up tho....hehe 2) Ten mile range is ugly, regardless of direction. 3) Send food drop to Silverton...don't try to ride on 1200 calories a day...

Toby, I have yet to do the out, so not yet worried about the back. Hoping to get the out done in 2011. Was thinking that Stephan could do with the CTR like Scott has done with the AZT and run 2 distances at once. I can see it now the CTR EVM ( extra value meal) or the CTR SSM ( super sized meal). Wonder how many would consider it? Tony

Toby - I agree.
Stefan - can we go in reverse and still use the call in number?

Alrighty, Denver ---> Durango it is.
Eddy, you can certainly use the call-in #, and I encourage anyone who wants to ride it in the opposite direction to coordinate a group start in Durango, maybe even on August 1st @ 6:30am!! That would be really cool!

Gdilon - that sounds like a good plan too. Get a little moon on the start, might be snow but maybe not. Depending on other responses I might join you Anyone else interested in a Aug 1 or the Saturday before start date? I know mtbriderz and dogboydan are somewhat flexible already.

Concerned, yes. But snowpack in the San Juans isn't as deep (right now) as the more northerly mountains. This summer will tell us alot. Heat, rain will help, but it looks to continue snowing in the high country through April for sure.
July 23 is a must start date for me, so I'll either be throwing the bike over giant piles of snow or detouring accordingly.

You guys concerned about snow on July 23?
From the Colorado Trail Foundation website ( http://www.coloradotrail.org/snowandweather.html): Snowpack on the CT is, every spring, a subject of great interest to CT users planning their trips. The common question is "When is The Colorado Trail likely to be snow free?" The general rule is that the CT is usually snow free by July 1 and the CT "season" can be viewed as primarily July and August. This July-August, CT season can (some years) be extended by a couple of weeks on each end to include the last 2 weeks in June and first 2 weeks in September. June can be "iffy" though, especially at the higher CT elevations and on the north facing hillsides and where the Trail is shaded in the trees. The following website links can be of help. They show current snow depth at 9 mountain locations that are relatively near the CT and at similar elevations.

I ask because I rather ride during a full moon, but snow is the question. I will monitor... but so far sticking to the Aug 2 official start date. eturk
