I registered last year to post on this thread and am back to follow this race again.  So impressed with all of the people who even attempt this!

So, to everyone in the race, GOGOGOGOGOGOGO!!!!

Can someone toss one of those tracking devices in Ethan's backpack the next time they see him?  This stealth-like approach is pretty sneaky ; )

Amen!

Just noticed that Jesse is not moving, sitting at the crest:

#153 on 09:43:01 AM (MDT) 08/03/11 (35 minutes ago) 0.0 ft traveled at 0.0 mph
#152 on 09:33:01 AM (MDT) 08/03/11 (45 minutes ago) 0.0 ft traveled at 0.0 mph
#151 on 09:23:01 AM (MDT) 08/03/11 (55 minutes ago) 0.0 ft traveled at 0.0 mph

Either that or he dropped his tracker and it's still transmitting...

Yes, indeed.  I admit I was tempted to try such a trick, though it never would have worked.  Ethan is a bit peeved at SPOT from his experience at the start of TD where his quit picking up satellites, he had to borrow one at the very last minute and pay an extra $150 for tracking service.

In any case, though we may not know where he his (aside from near the front) the racers on the ground will know, especially after heavy rain that wipes all previous tire tracks.  They may not know *exactly* how far ahead or where exactly he is, but they will certainly have an inkling.

Spots are great for spectating, and are encouraged for anyone chasing the course record as a means of verification (Owen used one), but Ethan is no rookie to the CTR.  He's earned his stars and stripes and proven his integrity, and in fact, he hasn't missed a CTR yet!  And he's the only one that can make that claim.  I, for one, am enjoying the speculation that comes with the uncertainty of his whereabouts.  Can't wait for his call-in from Silverton to see how things stand for the final stretch.

The BBQ place in Silverton better get ready! Ryan Fields is flying down 550 and will be there quickly. Last year he ate over $50.00 worth of BBQ in that place.

My wife just ran into Ethan on HWY 50. Looks like he had to pull the plug on the race. Hell, I would too after coming off the tour divide race! Still and will always be my favorite freak!!

This morning: Michael Chavez called in to say he’s out! Jefe Branham called in to say he’s out! Jarrel Ryder called in from Buena Vista. And Zach Allen called in from Copper!

Thanks for the updates and calls, Joe!

I guess it's a little comforting to know that Jefe and Ethan show some (small) signs of being human.  If either of them had recovered enough from the divide to pull off CTR fast I would have been absolutely floored.  Gotta give 'em props for believing in themselves and biting off more than they can chew.  That's always cool to see.

So... with our mystery man out, we now know that Salidan Kevin Thomas is in the lead.  Jesse is moving again after a brief daylight nap, and Eszter and/or Max are into third.

Wow, what a crazy day on the CTR.

Jesse is struggling his way along the crest, not sure why because that is such a great ride, even with CTR fatigue.  Hope he isn't also coming down with flu like symptoms?

JT gained a huge gap (12 miles) in a short period of time.  SS off the front, hells yea!  Fulton and AC are two more SSers in the top 10.  Shawn Gregory has been riding stellar as well, although his spot has gone dormant, not sure what to make of that.

Ezster remains rock steady - and will need to remain so to stay in front of Cat who is ~ 6 hours back.  These girls are going to take it to the line...question is, will one of them finish 1st overall?

And, then there's the Eastbounders.  Eddie Turkalay appears to be bailing Segment 23 by way of Cataract Gulch!  That trail looks to be a total ass kicker by bike in any direction, but if the weather gods say you gotta bail what's a guy to do?  Radar is starting to look fairly ugly up there.

Upcoming weather forecast:  drying some each day until Sun-Tues when it is expected to be dry and clear with a monsoonal reprieve.  Not much help for the leaders but mid-pack may have great weather in the San Juans.

Big ups to Ethan and Jefe for toeing the line.  Every now and then ya gotta jump into the abyss to see just how deep it is.

Go Jerry Oliver!  His tracking device has emitted a signal only 3 times the entire race.. the uncertaintly of knowing where he is at all times is making me crazy.. Hope he can hold on.. he appears to be in 8th place as of an hour ago!

Great job everyone! What an impressive race!

It looks like Jerry is only sending OK/check in messages.  He may not have paid the extra $$ for auto-tracking on his SPOT.  Or he may not know how to correctly get into track mode.

I think he paid the extra $$ for the auto-tracking....so he probably doesn't know how to get it correctly into the track mode.  I'll let him know if I talk to him..!

Hopefully Jerry can get it figured out.  "Watching" this race on the computer is a lot more exciting than I thought it would be.  Good work out there, folks!

Forest Baker called in from Leadville and Doug Johnson called in to say he’s out. His finger is just to bad to continue.

Posting some pics of riders I saw Monday night at Hwy 9 outside of Breckenridge.  I intended to get names and times all matched up, but I seem to have lost my little sheet of info that I wrote that down on.  Feel free to call out riders in the pics and I'll modify the post accordingly.  They are posted in the order they came through (detour or not).  I missed Jesse, and a few after Ethan when I went to go hang the detour sign at the trail closure.

1: Ethan Passant

2: Sean Jones, Zach Guy

3: ?, John Ross, John Fettis

4: Jordan Carr

5: Drew Holbrook, Chris Miller

6: Max Nuttelman

7: Cat Morrison

8: Jerry Oliver

10:

11: Eric Cutlip, Shawn Gregory, ?

12: John Fulton

13: Steve Lacey
