Indeed! I've always thought a SS might actually be an advantage rather than a handicap in the CTR. That is, perhaps, the biggest reason I haven't kept track in the results of how many gears people have on their bike. Lighter weight for all that hiking, more reliable in the horrible weather, and a time-saver when you don't have to at least try and get more than 1 gear working when your shifters and dérailleurs are all mucked up. Choosing a SS over gears is just another choice in the laundry list of what (and what not) to bring with you on the CTR.
If you are trained for it, why not? Some of those climbs on the Coney Mountain section would be brutal on a single, but then again, they are brutal on gears too!

First....Thanks Stefan, and your wife, for everything connected to this race. Riding is the easy part! Second....Even though I haven't completed this SOB yet and now sittin on the couch with a Dos XX watching my brothers via the web I still look forward to next year but don't tell my wife. Doc says I have some bacterial infection in lungs and some antibiotics will kick it in the ass. Third....During the CTR I got a chance to ride, some for only 5 minutes, with some of the most genuine people ever. Seeing them on the starting line and throughout the race is what it is about. Forth....Sorry to hear that Jefe and Ethan have bailed but proving that their human and giving us mortals hope. Fifth....A toast to those still braving the elements and the CTR. Kurt, Zach, Drew, John, John, Steve, Aaron, keep em turning and be safe. Sixth....That's the last of this pack.....Time to start thinking about a ride for this weekend to get ready for next year.

Just got off work and had a chance to review the day's events. Looks like Zach Guy is continuing his Colorado Trail Beer Tour. After arriving early into Breck to enjoy the Breckenridge Brewery with Sean Jones, it looks like he went a bit out of his way to stock up on PBR's and Schlitz at the tiny liquor store in Nathrop. Received this text from him at some point today: "Broken spoke, front fork out of air, lice, storms looming. Honey Badger doesn't give a sh*t." If you don't understand the last part of this.
Go Bro!

Regarding post 116. Picture 2 is Sean Jones and Zach Guy (montana state jersey) shortly before heading to the breck brewery and dancing with some cougars at the Dive Bar

It's really funny. I only hear the voices (not the ones in my head) so when I see the pictures I'm surprised they look nothing like I imagine.

Teddycricket thanks for making me laugh harder than I have in weeks! That IS the CTR in a nutshell! It took me over 11 days without even doing the official course!( I bailed and rode Cinnamon Pass instead of 22 and 23 (I got an "*" but still got the courtesy finish from Stefan(thanks))) in 09' and was without a doubt the hardest thing I have ever done in my lfe, but I was NOT going to be haunted by the fact that I quit after all that suffering. You GOTTA be the Honey Badger! Stupid and Relentless . Triple parenthese are rare and precious indeed. If I rode a SS in this race it would be a 20 x 36 cause that all i used last time (20 front that is)

Nice analysis, DaveH -- and this race has needed some. I was really surprised to come back and see Jesse still struggling along, and being passed wholesale by so many riders. Really curious what is going on with him. 4. GP, a roadie!
GP may be a roadie, and a strong one at that, but he has some AZ riding skills. I dragged him on some Santa Rita epics and other silliness, and he was first a MTBer for sure.

Anybody heard from Max Nuttleman? Wondering why he bailed, and if he talked with Jesse on the saddle where he has been camped out.
Gotta say I'm a little worried for Jesse. Three 4+ hour stops in the last 24 hours, and parking on top of a ridgeline at 11,400' with storms in the area seems indicative of something beyond fatigue or minor mechanical.

Here are some more pics. My wife and I rode down to the first Bear Creek crossing early Monday morning to get pictures of the start. I think she shot pics of most racers. Our apologies to those we missed. Link here: http://snowcatcher.smugmug.com/Cycling/2011-Colorado-Trail-Race/18339147_FD62rV. We've been following this race for several years, and I hoped to ride this year, but my work schedule had other plans. Maybe next year. We also are trying to match up names with faces. If you can help out, comment here, on the individual photos, pm me or email my wife. (email address on her front page) Thanks Stefan, Spot folks and all the riders for an epic Tour of Colorado. Brett

Picture 11 - Racer in the middle is Shawn Gregory on SS. Stefan thanks for posting the pictures! Shawn's little girl Ava was pretty happy to see her daddy.

Ethan Passant called in to say he’s out! And Chris Miller called in from Salida. He went off-route for some iodine. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

I'll take that a step further - I think he's got a shot at Owen's seemingly unbeatable record time. Kevin just wrapped out a very difficult section from hwy 50 to North Pass in under 12 hours. That's about 4 hours faster than anyone did it last year. He is not getting tired, I think he's picking it up. Amazing! He will likely be a little over 3 hours behind record pace at Cochetopa park. How strong he is in the San Jauns, and how gear limited he is on the big La Garita detour will be a couple big factors for him. I don't know him, but based on is "flow" I'd say it's within his reach...if he is willing to bury himself. And of course we all are when a record is on the line Hells yea! Go everyone! if anyone can bury themselves for a victory/record its KT - true superman in my books...

Hi; Does anyone know what has happened to Jesse Jakomait. According to the Tracker site, he has not moved for over 12 hours. I am really worried about his condition.
Jesse is on Photo 8 & 9 with a SRAM jersey.

Re Stefans pics, pic 3 centre is John Ross from the UK. 4th place finisher in Iditabike 2009, another event us Brits can't easily train for (altitude in the case of CTR, desert and high temps for the AZT300/700 attempts I made)! Usually SS but gears for this race as far as I can tell.
Re Bretts pics, John is in pics 53 (no footer river crossing), 54, 55.
Jealous!
