The battle for 2nd is shaping up to be pretty exciting. What kind of rigs are these 2 riding?
No idea on setups, but it is looking pretty close! Though Garrett is well on his way out of Silverton and Zach is regrouping there. Garrett is only 30 miles behind Kevin now, but that's likely too big a gap to close, especially with Kevin's descending and general MTB skill, which will come in handy on this stretch. Super impressive ride by all three of them, being pretty new to bikepacking races. Eszter is still way ahead of record pace and if all continues to go well, she'll finish well under 6 days -- possibly close to 5! The infrequency of her points in the last day suggests that her SPOT may be buried deeper in her pack or somewhere not accessible to the sky. I know she had spare batteries, so I don't think it's lack of power. Her riding has been super inspirational. Go Eszter!!

Rode with GP for a bit on my downward spiral on Georgia Pass during Day 1. GP is on a HT Specialized 29er. All weight in on his bike. No backpack. Very similar to a Tour Divide setup. Not sure of ZG's set up.

I am amazed at how fast the leaders caught him (starting 36 hrs later), and slightly concerned that he seems to have gotten race fever since being caught. He seemed to be pacing himself, even stopped for a shower in Buena Vista apparently, but has been on a roll since the race caught up.
I noticed this as well, and the same thing happened in the divide race this year. The psychology of having people around to chase and be chased by can be powerful. Dan was matching the leaders pace for some time, and has definitely picked it up overall since being caught. It's interesting to learn that this is his first race! On the divide it was Dave Bruno, I believe, who started a few days early and when was caught by Jefe and Kurt continued to match their pace (though still behind) for multiple days. Very interesting stuff from the trackers sometimes.

I got to see Kevin when he rode in to Silverton. He looked good though his feet are a wet mess and he has some good high altitude lung grunge going. Otherwise he was eating a burger and fries while wringing out wet gear and planning the last food purchase... His quote "this thing is brutal"... Lots of appreciation to everyone who has been tracking and supporting all these folks.
Hey @jthomas! Kev is amazing! Being able to follow this is fantastic, sending lots of luck from Syracuse. BK

Go Jerry Oliver! The infrequency of his SPOT signals is so frustrating...his SPOT must be buried in his bag somewhere.. He typically sends an "ok" message early each morning..and appears to be keeping the pace in the top ten. Not bad for his first CTR! Everyone in Vail is cheering for you Jerry! Go fast and Be Safe! I'll see you in Durango at the Ska for a few beers! Good luck to everyone - what an amazing race!

Zach Allen called in to say he and Marco Capote are in Buena Vista. You can get the audio here, via RSS, or on iTunes!

Do any riders ditch gear after the final night (to go back and pick up of course)?

It is incredible to be able to follow this race in this manner, cheer on and support the riders. I agree with others its highly addictive, and i thank everyone for the unique experience. I've ridden several sections of the CT recreationallyu and have spent the past few days in a dreamy state wondering what is must be like to do this point to point. I had talked to Tim extensively about the race and his studying of the route before leaving, but I didn't anticipate getting sucked in this manner. Tim's holding steady in mid of the pack 24 to 26th, and seems to be having a good race. He's a super strong rider and tough as nails, and was looking really forward to this, and I'm glad he's deep into the ride, although the sections before Silverton still lie ahead for him. Props also to Jerry Oliver, who does have the Vail area behind him. Its hard to believe how fast the leaders are going, and almost wrapping it up!

Ethan has a great story about sending stuff home at the Lake City PO then sleeping in the trail in only his bike stuff to know if anyone passed him! I picked him up hitch hiking home from the race that year in Gunny. He's an AWESOME character...

My son, Marco (MC) is just a few miles behind him (CD). As with all forms of racing, it is so much fun to watch this race as it unfolds. Not just the leaders, but every little mini-race along the way. It is Marco's first CTR and I am so proud he is hanging in there and happy he is having a blast!

CJ's sister here...giving props to ALL the CTR riders! I'm inspired by every single one of them.
And *so* proud of my bro! He's not a veteran this or pro that. He's never done a bike race of any sort, or any other endurance event for that matter. He's just an ordinary middle-aged guy with a desk-jockey day job and two little kids waiting for him at the end of the day. But he has an amazing amount of tenacity and determination for this CTR. He is the original Honey Badger!
GO CHUCKLES!!!!
