"He's just an ordinary middle-aged guy with a desk-jockey day job and two little kids waiting for him at the end of the day. But he has an amazing amount of tenacity and determination for this CTR. He is the original Honey Badger!" Here Here for the average Joe out there! It gets harder every day you wake up after a freezing night and get on your bike for more suffering! I'm guessing he may not be so ordinary any more. The trail does strange things to a man....................

Oh dear, John Ross has headed off track just after Cataract lake. I wonder if the altitude is causing problems as he's just gone over the highest peak of the race and was on the highest extended section. Anyone know if there is anywhere to bail out to along Pole Creek, which is where he's heading down. He could be just losing height the easiest way possible I guess, or just have made a wrong turn. Hope he's OK and can get back on track!

This is Shawn Gregory's first CTR and he chose to use it as a way to benefit and help gain recognition for the NEST (Nurturing Environment for a Safe Transition). The organization is designed to help abused children deal with the aftermath of the their horrible situation. This is not a plug for the organization, but it is important for those involved with the program to give a shout out to Shawn and let him know how much his effort is really appreciated. Good luck buddy and keep that SS movin'.

Our Man...
I noticed John Ross' spot take a detour as well. My first thought is I would agree with you - he might be losing elevation due to altitude sickness. Looks like there is a road further down Pole Creek that heads West to Silverton.

... he might be losing elevation due to altitude sickness. Looks like there is a road further down Pole Creek that heads West to Silverton. When you go down Pole Creek, you get to an intersection with the road to Silverton. But if you turn right (west) toward Silverton, you have to climb up to get over the top before going down into Silverton. If you turn left (east) that road goes down and down, following the canyon of the Rio Grande River. The road comes out near Creede, CO. That would be the bail. Past the Rio Grande Reservoir and down to Creede.

Despite the sea level domicile, John Ross has been gaining a lot of momentum. He's definitely not riding like a guy with altitude sickness (speaking from experience here!). I'd be really surprised if the turn down Pole Canyon was intentional.
In 2009 Jason Shelman got confused on where the route went in that region and ended up descending a side trail not just once but twice I think. He ran out of food and had to abandon. He was flying too, in 2nd behind Owen IIRC.
With the a limited fuel supply at this stage of a very long section with no services, he will need to figure this quick and get back on track.
Sending tracking vibes his way!

John Ross is heading up the drainage to Kite Lake! He must misplaced. It looks like there may be a nebulous trail that crosses the divide heading south to Vallecito Reservoir. I wonder if he has a GPS with him. Maybe he'll meet some campers or fishermen soon.
Jumpin' jiminy now he's climbing back up to the CTR!

It's a big fork in the trail. Here's the visual: https://picasaweb.google.com/LyndaWallenfels/CTTripJuly2011#5633434183997713570 The CT heads right up a pass beyond the sign in the distance.
Glad he figured it out, just a little blip in the scheme of things...but pretty tough timing!

Wow - that's a tough place to make a wrong turn and appears to be a significant amount of miles to regain. Has anyone heard from Lucas Weikart or Gary Fenton? Both of their SPOTS show Leadville locations but no call ins or change in movements.

Jerry Oliver made it to Silverton about 4:00....he lost his GPS about 2 days ago and took a wrong turn somewhere this morning that cost him about 2 hours...ran out of batteries for his head lamp...and ran into a mountain lion... Other than that ..he's doing awesome! Hopes to be in Durango by tomorrow ! Go jerry! well done!

hey all: I got stuck in Silverton yesterday after attempting hike up Stoney Pass. Major lightning forced a bail off the pass around 1PM. I decided to ride Cinnamon Pass to Lake City (currently there creating this post). I hope to run into Apple tonight. Coming from sea level this year has proved to be majorly difficult. The elevation totals comparing both start directions may be comprable, but it seems the elevation comes much more quickly from Durango. Good times! Monsoon season is just about over. I'm stoked to leave the San Juans behind and make some progress tonight. I hope those still out there are riding safe and having a great ride!

What do you suppose the minimum riding speed is (vs. walking)?
Jill Hueckman's speed has dropped to .7mph for the last 2.5 hours. She flatted earlier and reported that her pump was broken. She had to wait for Forest Baker to catch her to get some air in the tire. Hoping she hasn't flatted again, and is left pushing until another rider comes along.

charlieboy, it sounds like Jerry is still doing well. I bet the mountain lion was an unwelcome sight. Hopefully he can keep up the pace and cruise in tomorrow.
Did Kevin already finish?
