Still undecided if I need to do this more than once in my life but I voted for Aug 1 and have no preference on the direction.  The ride works well starting in Denver and maybe safer for those that get in over their heads but it would be fun to try the trails the other way too.

Andy,

Are you really coming to Colorado from the UK to race the CTR?

Andy, that is a legitimate concern for sure! I recommend that you arrive at least a few days prior to the race and spend a few nights in the mountains. It doesn't take terribly long to acclimate, and you'll really suffer if you don't do it!

From the looks of things you've got some bad ass races in your past! Good luck with the altitude though, it took me about 6 weeks to get fully adjusted when I first moved here. I do seem have problems with altitude though, had to bail between 16K-17K on aconcagua on another adventure. There's a ton fun riding here at altitude if you come early and want to train.  Just ask on the forum and we'll hook you up.

Dave Harris wrote a good blog post on his struggles in the CTR with altitude here: http://2-epic.com/?p=1269

Also, here's a ton of pic's from a car supported ride of the CT: http://spedden.com

I'm getting stoked!  Any word on when a date might be selected?  I'm considering putting in for the L100 lottery if the date is Aug 1st.

Thanks guys - appreciate the advice.  I think me and (faster) brother Steve are hoping to head out at least a week before race start to give the lungs a try-out.  I biked in CO about 7 years and couldn't believe how rough I felt 200yards out from the trailhead - humbling!

Thanks for weighing in everyone.  Seems the majority of you don't give a rat's ass about the full moon or extra daylight.  I wonder if that's a product of all the great LED lighting technologies out there, or you all are just bad-asses!

So, the 2011 CTR will start August 1st, 6:30 @ Rampart Range parking area - same place as last year.

Stefan,
Can you remind us of the full intel. on Colorado monsoon season?
I'm no meteorologist, and to be honest with you, in my experience, the "monsoon" season in Colorado almost seems totally bogus.  Early summer has the typical afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains that clear out by late afternoon, but by mid summer (mid-July to mid-August) we either get pounded with rain (CTR '07, '10) or we have many beautiful sunny days in a row (CTR '08, '09).  Just looking at the 1st week of August for the last 5 years, we've had everything from flawless weather to absolute downpours.  And both types of weather sandwiched on either side by the opposite type for a week...

The ideal way to do the CTR would be to pick a start date range of about a week, and then decide the exact day based on forecasts.  If I were to do an ITT, this is exactly what I'd do.  But for group start, we gotta set the date in advance...

As the (un)organizer for TD, i admit i am biased towards 7th of August so that the double or triple crown of ultra bikepack racing is more feasible (with good form). I know Ethan Passant for one has his eye on this, and perhaps Kurt? Maybe Ezster, too? (Apologies to Chad, et al)

Yes, an extra week would definitely help out those TDers who want to do both.  But since I started the poll, I'm going to stick with the quite clear results...  You Triple-crowners will have to be even tougher now!

BTW, I closed the voting and made the decision at 40 votes since that was (approximately) the number of starters for the last 2 years.
