Hello, another question about the SPOT tracker.  I am registering my spot on their website, and one of the options is for Track Progress.  Is that required also, or just a basic spot subscription.  Thanks!

You need tracking too.

Technically, you don't *need* tracking, but if you don't have it and you sign up your Spot to be on the leaderboard, your tracking point will only be updated when you manually send an "OK" message from the device.

Anyone interested in getting together for a beer in the next couple of weeks? I've organized a couple of casual get-togethers in Fort Collins the last couple of years, and it's been fun to meet other riders before the race.

To get the ball rolling, how the 5:30 PM on 18th at the Rio in Fort Collins sound?
Seems that there's a little interest in doing this. Maybe move to Odell Brewing instead?

The last couple of time that we did this, it was fun!

Please PM me if you're coming. I'd like to reserve a table. Thank!

Not many people showed up last night--although Walter and I had a nice time. Did I pick a bad time or something?

Maybe not enough notice.

Another Spot question - Do you turn it off when you stop for the night/long breaks or just leave it on?

I try to turn it off at night, but I usually forget and just leave it on...

Can anyone that has done the CTR before give me an estimate of the coldest temperature that we will likely see on the route?  I don't need it to be spot on, just a guess.

Thanks

Looked at some of the high elevation towns like Leadville and it seems like the lows average in the upper 30's.  That's around 10,000 feet so I am guessing that it might be a little colder above that.  I plan on sleeping at lower elevations so that I get better recovery and better temps.

Anyone doing the CTR, or an ITT of the CT using a hammock for sleeping or are there some really long stretches where I won't have trees to hang on? Im debating on what sleeping system to use and I am not a good sleeper so need to be comfortable to make my ride a success. Anyone heard of somebody using a hammock to bike the whole thing?

Also, Ill be starting my ride a few days after the official race starts. Anyone else planning on a late start? Im getting a one way car rental from Durango to get back. If anyone else finishes at the same time I do I am happy to take someone else along with me back to the Boulder/Denver area.

39 racers on the tracker so far, including our first yellow dot (ITT), now heading towards Georgia Pass from Kenosha.  This is going to be a good year!

I did part of the route (Kenosha to Mt Princeton) with a Hennesey Hammock and was cold every night, even with all my clothes on and rain gear wrapped around me inside my sleeping bag! At least it made me want to get up in the morning and get moving!

Are you really resistant to the cold like I am?  I wonder if the hammock makes for a colder night as well, never slept in one?

Yes, the hammock definitely made for colder nights...all that open air below you.
It was also late Aug/early Sept though

THanks for the tips. Although, you guys didnt really have any insulation below you so I can see why youd be cold. Using Hennessy's 3 oz overcover and some type of pad underneath I  bet itd be a lot warmer. My main concern isnt the cold (I am a very warm sleeper), just wondering if Ill have a problem finding adequate trees each day to set the hammock up on or if Im better off with a tent. I dont like the idea of a tarp tent-- mosquitoes have a way of finding me unless I am in a sealed environment of some sort (tent, hammock with bug net, etc...)

If you go with the hammock make sure that it is waterproof so that you don't get drenched when it rains, because it will most likely pour.  I prefer either a tent or a bivy sack, sleeping on the ground for me is more comfortable than being in a hammock.  My body feels too bent in the hammock.

Seems like you won't have a problem staying warm no matter what route you choose, just make sure whatever you go with can keep you dry and out of the elements, test it first.

Because I haven't ridden the route I cannot say whether there will be long stretches without trees that are adequate, but my guess is there are plenty because it's Colorado.  There may be some long meadow, grassy plain stretches without trees, or long sections above tree-line though. If you don't have any trees you will just have to keep riding until you find some which could possibly turn into a long night, but I'm not sure.

Another thing to think about when choosing the hammock...if there are no trees around where you are and the shit hits the fan weather wise at night when you want to sleep you might be out of luck.  With my hooped bivy sack I can trow it out and toss in my sleeping kit and be asleep in under a few minutes.  So a bivy or tent is more convenient and reliable in a situation like that.  You just want to be prepared and choose what makes you the most comfortable.

Hope I gave you some important things to consider that will make you decision easier.

Initially I was going to bring my hammock on the CTR, but after some test runs with it I found it to be a pain in the butt.  It requires more time to set up and take down, and its also harder to get in and out of especially with a sleeping bag.  And if you need to set up the rain fly, that takes even more time.  Also mine weighs about 2 lbs and took up too much room.  It is an Eno doublenest.  I am however going to use the eno rain fly for my tarp tent.

There are definitely enough trees to hang a hammock, except for just past spring creek pass all the way to silverton, about 40 miles.
