Getting all the final preparations done over the last few days... Got the new goodies on the bike(wheels, larger rear cog, new longer belt)...  Just printed out some small maps, with elevation profiles, broken down by day, see the sample below of Day 4.  Batteries are charged, Spot is registered, food has been purchased...

This has nothing to do with planning so Mods...feel free to start a new CTR discussion thread and move this over there. Was wondering if anyone knows what's going on with Christophe Noel and his ITT? He's been in Breck for a while now. Wondering if there is a problem? I'm thinking he didn't turn on his SPOT.

That's a hell of a Day 4.  Have you done the second half of that before?

For those who aren't familiar with Colorado's high-mountain lightening risks, here's a good article the I came across recently.

Very informative, keeps it simple yet a little scientific for those that want to know more of the details.

Has anyone had any luck putting Toby's GPX files onto their DeLorme GPS? How did you do it? I put the SD card in my computer and copied the files onto it but cant get them to show up on my GPS. Anyone have any tips? (Im using a macbook)

BTW, thanks for the file Toby!

EDIT: Im an idiot. Forgot to add it to the waypoints folder-- I accidentally added it to the tracks folder. AWESOME resource.

riverfever,

I've been wondering the exact same thing. He made pretty solid progress on day 1, but day 2 is still a bit of a mystery to me?

Any comments on how bad the smoke is right now at various places along the trail?

This site has reasonably complete fire information for the US:
http://inciweb.org/

Sorted for Colorado only:
http://inciweb.org/state/6/#

There's been no smoke on the front range for weeks. Unless something new gets started, I think that the air will be clear!

SEARCH and RESCUE

I hope nobody needs the services of search and rescue, but a $3 CORSAR Card helps fund the volunteer search and rescue teams that might have to be tapped. A card, good for one year, is available at a variety of CO outdoor retailers, from REI to even Wal-Mart, and online.

Which also reminds me to make a donation to the Colorado Trail Foundation...

I possibly have a one way car that will go to Denver on the 29th, would like to share expenses/resouces. It is easier for me to leave from Telluride instead of Durango though. Anyone want to jump on board?

For those interested, Reveal the Path is showing this Friday in Denver (http://revealthepath.com/screenings/).  I think it is a movie about bike packing around the world (made by the same guy that did Ride the Divide), following Matt Lee (who did the CTR in 2007) and Kurt Refsnider. Thought it would be interesting to watch b/f doing the CTR. Anyone want to meet for a drink b/f the movie?

My good friend and I are starting our CTR ITT on Saturday, July 28 at 6:00 a.m. We land at Denver International Airport (DIA) around 9:00 p.m. We're working on finding a way from the airport to the Waterton Canyon TH that evening (possibly camping in the parking lot or Chatfield State Park). The only transportation option that we can think of is to take public transit as far as we can and then bike the remaining distance. We figured taking a cab would cost us way too much since it's a 50 mile drive from DIA. Any suggestions?

Hey CTR planners!  I just did a fly over in Topofusion of my GPX file vs. Toby's GPX file.  And, damn, I had a great time reliving all the adventures I've had on the Colorado Trail over the years.  Every segment of the trail holds its own special memory.  Man, you all are in for a great adventure!  The monsoons have been in full swing over the last couple weeks, which is a great omen.  They usually let up for a week or two after being so heavy, and hopefully this will coincide with the 2012 CTR and the upcoming full moon!  This could be one for the record books, even without Owen Murphy present - though I know that he, and I, would both love to be riding this year.

Big M, little m, what begins with M?  Mmmm, mountain bikes in the moonlight!  M...m...M.   glasses2

Back to the GPX tracks.  Download whichever you prefer to use for the race - they are both 100% accurate in all the right places.  If you are worried about getting lost on some of the paved detours, Toby's is the way to go.   Wink  If you don't want a bunch of waypoints cluttering up your 20,000' view, download mine.

And please pay attention for the first few miles after you get back on the trail at Spring Creek Pass!  The trail can be a bit hard to follow there, especially at night.  This was the area of the toughest call in the history of CTR's.  Witness Ethan Passant's track:

http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/2009/ethan_passant.gif

vs. Owen's track:

http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/2009/owen_murphy.gif

Both unintentionally got off route.  Somehow Owen realized it and backtracked.  Ethan never even knew - until I lost a night's sleep, and then emailed him about it.  I'm sure that was a complete buzz kill for him, but I didn't know what else to do...

Those of you who are renting Spot units - I will be at the start by 5am to hand them out and give brief instructions on how to use them.  In this last week leading up to the start of the race, I deplore all of you to please read and reread the race rules and FAQ,

http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/ctr_rules.html

and then ask any questions before the race starts!

Landing at 9pm and starting by 6am is a touch unrealistic if using public transit and not taking a cab or shuttle.  You can try to find the best itinerary with RTD here:  http://www.rtd-denver.com/, but service is limited later at night, and you might have to make connections, etc..

I'd recommend getting reservations with Supershuttle (google it) or a taxi and either getting a cheap motel in S. Denver, or maybe look into camping at Chatfield State Park?  Since you are arriving late and starting early, you could likely get away with bivying at the parking lot, but I can't recommend that as an official way to go...

Re: Chatfield Camping
If anyone wants to double-up on our camping spot, we will be camping at Chatfield on SUNDAY night, in spot C-152. Call me a wuss, but I want a morning hot shower before the start. And if you're stuck in downtown Denver Sunday evening, we can shuttle you out to Chatfield, after drum circle at REI...

What post offices did you guys mail stuff to? I was thinking mailing a package to BV with a bunch of "delicious" dehydrated MRE type items, protein bars, NUNN, etc... and was wondering which post offices you found most useful to mail stuff to? Do I just write the address of the post office and c/o (insert your name here), or do I have to call and tell them Ill be doing this so they are expecting it? I guess theyll hold it for what, 30 days?

Almost everything that you need can be purchased in BV, so I don't bother to mail anything.
