stefan, have you found that the down/synthetic jacket isn't necessary while you're moving?

Everybody has their own comfort zone, and I tend to get cold easily. A longsleeve fleece shirt with a rain shell has been enough for me when moving. Some of the downhills can get cold though. I always just figured that if I got too cold, I could just stop and bivy-up in my warm sleeping bag...

I like your thinking. I have a fairly fitted rain jacket and assumed a fleece wouldn't fit underneath but it does. When I wake up I can deal with being cold for 15 mins as I get going. The extra tire thought came about because I'm running what would be considered fairly light tires, maxxis ikon exo at 580 grams (claimed) for 29er. It's what I have, they're new, and they're a bit beefier than the Specialized Renegades I had been running.

This will be my 3rd attempt at this beast this year. Every year, my CTR gear/kit gets smaller and smaller. Stephen is correct, everyone is different when it comes to supplies to carry, bike to choose, etc, etc. That is the cool thing about this format of riding/racing.....how people manage to get from Point A to Point B. Lighter is sometimes not always better. Pretty much my set up, minus the pack on my back. Agree, leave spare tire at home. Maybe even the sleeping bag. Don't skimp on tires. Just my 2¢. There is no right or wrong way.

Jeff, I'd have to experiment one year to see where I camp and what the temps are with regards to skipping the bag. This year I'm leaving the sleeping pad at home because I don't have a light/small one (I have a light tarp with groundcloth). I remember working trail crew in Boulder and taking naps everyday so I know it can be done. As for your setup, reading your blog perhaps inspired me to take a second look at my gear. I noticed the pack you have is a bit smaller, and bike setup similar = it looked like you have less stuff! And tires, if I got super strong ones, they'd probably weight 750 grams each. Instead I got three shitty ones that weight the same, ha.

There are two ways to skin this cat. Go light or go without. Some riders omit entire pieces to reduce weight. Others include all the pieces they want to carry, but buy the lightest versions of those pieces. That's spendy. The kit I've used for a couple years weighs about 11 pounds including bags, but not food and water. That's all the luxuries including a stove, thick pad, bag, even a Steripen for water treatment.
I seldom lament the thing I didn't bring, but often learn to hate the pack dweller. That thing that I brought that I wish you hadn't. My most recent pack dweller was an Esbit stove.
By the way, Jeff. I came down with a bug the night before I did my ITT last week. I had a slight fever for a couple days. I for one understand full well what you endured last year during your attempt. Sick...ain't the way to ride this thing.

I'm an OCD weight weenie! Got my gear down a little farther this year with a few new pieces. All my gear and bike without food or water is 32lbs (what you see in the pick plus a 3.5lbs pack). I'm still a wuss and am taking a sleeping bag, tent and a real bike light that forces me to carry all the battery power from the start. Of course you could go lighter by omitting things - nothing is lighter than zero! If you are serious about weight think about dropping some coin here: www.zpacks.com. I have no affiliation but who can argue with a 4 oz backpack?

I think you got 1/2lb on me with the saddle. I'd strap on a 700 gram saddle if that's what it took to prevent saddle sores. In this case maybe just a 400 gram one.

1x11, nice! Ya Jeff, I drew the long straw and lucked out getting the new XX1 kit. CTR is the ultimate testing ground for new parts! The 10-42 cassette is wild how much gear range you get and I'm still baffled how well that special teeth on the front ring work. Hopefully my left thumb doesn't get too bored out there!

I'm getting ready to head to the airport in 30 mins and catch a flight to Durango. I'll be starting an ITT at 6 am tomorrow. See you guys and gals on the trail! I'll be riding a bright blue Salsa singlespeed. Happy Trails! Dan

I think I only got 3 or 4 days in track mode last year, even turning it off at night.

My SPOT 2 was consistently making it 3.5 days on the Divide on Lithium Ultimates.

Anyone have a suggestion for getting from greenwood to littleton or the trailhead tomorrow on public transportation? No time constraints for tomorrow so any route will work.
Thanks!

Def. don't count on it, bring along 3 spare for sure. The last bunch of batteries I put in on the TD seem to last forever. I want to say it's because the SPOT 2 was mounted right on the bars w/zip ties, with the interface pointing straight up, rather than in my handlebar bag at who-knows-what angle. It's probably just like a cellphone, where it burns through a ton of juice, trying to acquire a stronger signal, so anything you can do to help that, makes it a little more efficient.

Greenwood village to waterton canyon isn't that far. Maybe a three hour ride at a super leisurely pace. Take highline canal to south platte to chatfield, all on bike path. Good luck.

Hey all, just got back from a nice 5 hour ride and it put a smile on my face to think you guys are heading out for 5 DAYS, give or take a few! My fridge is stocked and my arm chair is beckoning. I hope the weather holds, tires stay inflated, limits are tested, friendships formed, and records broken! Best of luck to all you adventurous souls. -Owen
