Extremely disappointed to not be able to toe the line this morning.  Our dog has been not acting quite normal most of the summer.  Took her into a clinic last night on our way down from Laramie and left her.  Went back this morning after camping at Chatwick and we put her down.  My legs and bike are all ready to roll for an itt I'll start tomorrow.  It's going to be much tougher mentally since she's been our epic summer travel companion for 8 Summers.
Will probably never go back to Laramie as our previous trip three resulted in the  loss of a truck with only 60,000 miles on it. This loss is much tougheryhan a stupid truck.
So just hanging out in the campground for now.

I detect a Wyoming jersey under Todd's vest  thumbsup
Go Todd,  and everyone else, (especially the singlespeeders)

Looking at CTR2013 myself.

Yeah, he's riding on the Hoback Sports team out of J-hole.

Yup, it's for real, but I did not see him at the start this morning, and his Spot does not indicate that he's on the trail yet.  There's a link to his SPOT share page here:  http://teamcrestedbutte.blogspot.com/2012/07/sully-goes-for-colorado-trail-race.html

I've tried to clear up the confusion with a couple posts to his blog (above) that he's actually not running the CTR, he's running the *entire* CT - no detours.  Since he is on foot, he will go through all the wildernesses.  He is also fully supported with a crew.  So, completely unrelated to the CTR, really.  And a little frustrating that he keeps referencing the CTR and breaking the foot-travel record since there isn't one.  Yet...

Regardless, I hope he gets going soon and has an awesome time on the trail!  The CT-by-foot record of 8d12h is, perhaps, more solid than Owen's 4d3h CTR record.  But, as they say, "Records are made to be broken."  Look forward to seeing how things transpire on the Colorado Trail this year.    glasses2

Thanks man, I was just researching this....I'm not going to get any work done this week, I can see that already.

so much for my arching/anti-electricity/juju theory. Looks like some are about to get pounded, if they haven't already.

Yep, it's time to head up Georgia pass, right at thunderstorm o'clock.  Whew.

Update on Jill H...she suffered a major mechanical with her drivetrain.  She's backtracked to a bikeshop in Denver, but is having trouble finding a shop that has what she needs in stock.  I won't speak for her, but sounds like she's bailing on the "race" and will head back out for an ITT once it's all sorted out.

Send some good bike juju her way!

Wettest storm I ever rode through was back of Georgia pass, CTR 2010.  Still drying out from that one...

Scott how come you aren't out there this year?  Saving your beans for another Coco ride??

Hey Scott, Did David Goldberg toe the line today? I know he was attempting the bikepacking triple crown, but I don't see his name on the list.

Kurt S. is crushing it....again. That's one heck of a summer.

David Goldberg, aka beardog, withdrew before the start of the race.  Inbetween TD and CTR he was touring in Vietnam by bike.  Said he was too tired and injured to have 'any fun at all' out there.  Probably a wise choice and still a heck of a year.

Kurt is indeed crushing it.  He's setting the bar *high* for the triple crown!

Now it's time for some serious blue-dot watching (http://trackleaders.com/ctr)

A little confused by that page.  So, the blue dot people are the ones in the CTR?  What are all the other colors?  Why is there a blue dot already in BV?

There's a legend on the side bar if you click it.

Always check the timestamp / freshness of the points.  The blue dot in BV is an old point, and someone who has not yet gotten his tracker into tracking mode since the start of the race.

Yellow = ITT, pink = women.

BangHead Never ever put a brand new chain on an old drivetrain. I guess I must learn everything the hard way. My mechanical ignorance was my downfall as I was unable to use my small or middle chainring to climb out of Waterton Canyon. Big ringing it to Durango is beyond my fitness and strength. The correct fix for my fried drivetrain (maybe my blog was some eerie foreshadowing? eek!)is going to run me far more than I am able to throw down, but new front chainrings may do the trick. My race is done and although I can't commit to an ITT at this moment, I am hopeful.

Kurt is definitely riding strong this year.  The first time I saw him this year was in February, as he was just "riding home" to New York from visiting family in Cali.  That's a hell of a ride home, especially in February.  Good training for ultras though...

Where is the thread to keep up on the racers progress for the CTR or is this it? Is there still a SPOT page/URL for tracking their movement?

I was wondering around like a fool this morning with my camera, but not really using it.  D'oh!  I do have some random shots from the start here:
http://gearspeak.com/~cartographer/mtb/2012/ctr/

Feel free to link here with names if you want.  Most of the gear looked really tight and well considered, compared to the start I attended 3 years ago.

For starters

I also made a short trip on the CT from Copper up towards Searl Pass on Saturday, which looked a little like this:

I just had to pop in and give a shout out to my friend Dan Lionberg who already seems to be off to an excellent start. Go, Dan!

Man, I love following this race.

That first photo, Cartographer, is Stefan with what looks like a fresh Ian Altman, from Durango!
