Silverton already?  Crazy, just freaking crazy!  I hope Max got some sleep! Molas to Durango is the hardest ride I've ever done, so it ain't over yet....

Rick - I think Max got a few hours of sleep.  He's right on pace for his goal of 5 days.  I don't know if it is against the rules (don't think it is as long as you don't aid him), but I'm sure he'd love to have some company on those last segments...

Wendy and I are planning Molas to Bolam Friday morning, hoping the timing works but looks like he is going too fast!

If Ethan left now, he'd crush the record by almost 12 hours or so.  I thought that was impossible only three days ago.  Sheesh...

Dave Pickett-Heaps is feeling great mentally, hurting a bit on the back. Gonna make a call much later today -- but his wife said he needs to finish it because she's not taking him down to get his truck in Durango. Smiley

on that note...

Thanks to this awesome group of people and to the one that found DPH's credit card at Waterton Canyon and is returning to his wife (who lost it).

Cat Morrison is riding really strong this year (as always).  Every time I see her during a race it's generally when I've stopped to eat or something and she just passes me at the same steady pace she always has.  Historically I don't see her again, either... Smiley

She's close to Eszter's record pace as well.  If she keeps up her normal M.O., she could break it!

Calls: ITT’er David Wilson called in from BV. He’s waiting on Safeway to open to grab some food and head out! Sorry to hear about his dog. And Alex Platt called in from BV to say he’s OUT!

Wow! I only got 6 hours of sleep last night and was feeling sorry for myself until I pulled up the CTR page. Holy hell, indeed -- Ethan and Jefe are amazing! One last biiiiig push today (though I suppose they've been pushing since day 1). Mighty impressive you guys. Good luck!

Maybe you don't think Jesse is in the race but despite being 10-30 miles behind, in a 500 mile race, and from what I know of him, Jesse's in it.

I'm also hoping Karma is on Jesse's side.  He's had a very stressful week(s) taking care of me, after breaking my fibula, tibia, and more and having surgery due to injury just last Friday (not even a week ago), the full anesthesia type surgery.   So when I say taking care of me, I mean Jesse not only worked but played like full caregiver.  Because of my injuries and immobility, he was not going to do the race and instead stay home with me, and I was like "hell no, go get that time goal you have!"

So yeah, Ethan and Jefe are awesome, But I think for trailing so close, Jesse is not to be written off, he may also make 4 days even if he does not win.

And a general note to anyone that may see him or have contact with him, you can let him know that  I. Alicia,  gave myself another head injury last night, I was weak and as I was going upstairs to make sure the door was locked, I lost stability, fell backwards down the stairs and woke up many hours later, after apparently hitting my head on the way down during my back-first fall.  If anyone sees him tell him he had better not give up or slow down, tell him how lucky he is to be able to pedal at all LOL.  Or to Harden the F Up, all those things will encourage him.  Tell him his aching legs can make it another hundred miles, and to ride for me who cannot ride at all.  I want him to keep going and not to quit and get home as fast as he can.

--The injured wife at home

Nobody's counting Jesse out of anything, and I do know him.  But those 10-30 miles he's behind are perhaps the most difficult - and slowest - 10-30 miles on the entire 500-mile route, so it isn't a matter of an hour or even two to catch up.  Something pretty major would have to happen to Ethan and Jefe for them to not take the top two.  It ain't like third at close to record pace is bad...

Yeah but have you seen how much he slept compared to Jefe?  I mean he's only stopped up till Silverton for 2.5 hours!  If Jefe makes it to the finish with that little sleep a pro adventure racing team should pick him up, the guy is a machine- I mean to not need sleep-- to pull off that amount of speed and distance w/2.5 hrs of sleep is really impressive.  And I completely respect Ethan's history with this race and think he is very determined for the record and the win.  They all are, esp the men/women at the front giving all they have within themselves to this race with little luxury, as intended.

My hold out of hope for Jesse is that he has slept more Jefe and than Ethan too.  If anyone is gonna pull a keep riding to the finish, that sleep and rest can make all the difference too.  It is why Jesse had to quit last year, he did not eat enough and his stomach killed him.  I think sleep is a factor, but apparently for some human beings it is not.  When I'm 40 I'll do this race, I'll take it seriously, but I expect to sleep at least 6 hrs out of 24.  But I'm a DH racer, what do I know?

It's all good, everyone out there pushing it deserves props.

Quick update. Was having a good ride, but for few down moments on Ten Mile and just before Leadville. Turned it around...felt amazing on the bike. Cut side wall on Marshall, Stan's would seal it. Put in tube 1 and flatted minutes later. 2nd tube, which was new, had hole in it. Tried to fill tire with grass, but rolled tire off rim. Bailed at Sargents Mesa with 5 hr downhill ride on rim to Saguache were I slept in city park, then picked up by Looney and KJ. CTR is a beast that keeps chewing me up. One day i will slay the beast. Eathan, Jefe, JJ are flying! Good luck to them and all others still out there!

Bummer Jeff!  I have a couple logistical questions...

Do you carry a sidewall patch and, if so, did you try that?  I've successfully used them in the past for a sidewall tear with a tubed tire, but when I tried it with a tubeless tire filled with Stan's it was just a big mess that didn't work.

Do you carry a patch kit?  I always do because I'd hate to have to walk out or bail if I could have simply fixed a tube or two.  At Vapor Trail a couple years ago, I remember looking at all the "fast guys" (yourself included) and thinking to myself, "These guys are carrying far less junk than I am."

Thanks and better luck next time...

I had 2 spare tubes and many sidewall patches. Went thru the tubes in 20 minutes. Sidewall patches werent needed. Didn't have patch kit, which was oversight on my part. Every year learn something different at CTR. The route and ride fascinates me, one day it'll all come together. I'm bummed, but know how hard route is. CTR will always be there.

Wow.  Larry and I are both calling it.  Slept well in a baseball dugout lastnight after a hard push through the storm from Leadville with Dave Wilson, who is cruising along nicely, after starting a day late.
Just can't justify a move to keep pushing at the pace we've been going.  Duty calls and we both have jobs to be back to by Tuesday.  We kind of set ourselves up in that respect.  Had a blast!  Hurt a ton! Learned a lot!
The Colorado Trail Push is no joke!

Sorry Mrs. Jakomait, I intended no such sentiment. Jesse's a major stud as well. In fact, they're ALL studs. I was just uber-impressed by Ethan and Jefe's total lack of sleep through the highest portion of the race. Best of luck to Jesse as well.

No Worries Owen, I still have a head injury and am not thinking clearly the internet is a bad place to be under such circumstances.  I know you meant no ill will.  Jesse has a strong finish in him if his plan is going as he intended.  I totally agree with you about the lack of sleep of Jefe and Ethan, It is rather unbelievable, for me.  Thanks and hope to share a beer sometime soon.

Whooo... it is close at the front.  And I see yellow pixels on the radar right over both Ethan and Jefe now.  No breaks with the weather this year... making it all the more impressive.

Jefe is known for long pushes without sleep, but I think his raceflow line is a bit misleading since he had some stretches w/o points in there.  It's not clear just how sleepless he is going.  One thing is for sure, whoever can battle the sleep monster successfully come nightfall tonight will end up at Junction Creek first.

This is going to be good!

I received several emails from folks reporting scratches recently.  Reload the tracker and check the 'by status' area to see them now.
