The pace is unreal!!!

Ethan just crossed over this pass:

Wow, that pass photo (amongst others) certainly adds to the beauty of this race. Will ahve to at least try and find a loop that would take in Rolling Pass. Looks amazing.

I'm out.  Took Hwy 50 to Salida earlier today.  Coasted to Salida with a blown rear hub, not the worst mechanical, but I also listened to my body and it said "uh-uh, not this time, cowboy".  Pushed through first 2 days of nausea and stomach issues, then 3rd day of flu in the head, ears, throat, but once it descended to my chest this morning, I decided to "live to fight another day".  Nothing unusual about the roll call of other challenges I faced on route, but each took its toll in some little way or another.  Just feels like it wasn't meant to be for me this year.  Maybe I'll start up a blog and drop more detailed thoughts, especially about the wild weather.  Heading back to sea level tomorrow (Seattle area).

Mad props to all those out there, doing it to it!  The CTR is a monster indeed.  Special thanks to Evolution Cycles in Highlands Ranch (~10 miles from start) that helped me out a day before the start, and to the Trailhead shop in BV that hooked us up with mechanical repairs on the spot when Becky S and I rolled in.  I enjoyed meeting other riders and getting "initiated" to the CTR.  It's accurate to say for me that I had no idea how hard this thing is.  And of course, thanks to my wife and family for letting me have "this treat" of adventure for myself.

Also, for those planning CTR trips that involve flying in to DIA and no local friends/support prearranged, here's a quick blurb about how it worked great for me: flew in, grabbed my bike in a box, carried it up one level, found the RTD (public transit bus), took bus to downtown 30th/Downing light rail station, rode light rail D-line as far as it would go which is Mineral Station, booked hotel at Hampton on West County Line road which is 1 mile from Mineral Station.  Called hotel for courtesy shuttle and they came in 5 minutes just before rains hit hard.  They have a large SUV as their shuttle so thankfully the bike-in-box fit. All this booking, logistics, and travel was done on-the-fly after landing in DIA (got lucky since I booked the hotel based on location to the start before knowing about the bus/light rail option).  Pretty slick.  Cost for bus/light rail/courtesy shuttle was $11 total.  Time from landing in DIA to hotel front door: 2.5 hrs.  Then next day found the bike path just across from the beltway (C-470) from the hotel that goes directly in the Chatfield State Park and scoped out the super easy link from paved path to park road to gravel 2track to trail directly into the "back door" of the Waterton TH parking lot.  Next morning was day-of-race Monday, so I "pre-rode" the previously scoped out 8-mile route from hotel to start.

Blessings,
Mike

Good effort mike-- even without a finish, you still got to ride some amazing trail!

Was it tough getting back to denver with your bike from where you bailed or are the buses from salida petty easy to figure out?

Calls: Jesse Jakomait called in from Silverton. He managed to stay dry up until he got into town. Jason Murrell called in to say he’s OUT! Nick Woodland called in from Salida to say he’s OUT! Christina Nacos called in from Salida to say she’s not feeling well. She will assess how she feels in the morning!

I keep looking for a narrowing or widening of the gap between EP and JB on the raceflow plot but I am not seeing it.  They are riding seemingly the exact same pace, just 9-10 miles apart.  Now that it's dark are any sleep gremlins coming in?  Doesn't look like it -- yet.  The end is close, but as anyone that has finished CTR knows, there's nothing easy about it.  It'll still be a while yet, but seems like a blazing new record is soon to be set.  Under 4 days... that's fast.

I think Ethan is sleeping.  Uh oh.  But I notice it's in a very odd spot to sleep... maybe he's sleeping across the trail at the one super-narrow spot on Indian Ridge?  Total conjuncture, but fun to imagine.

It is getting interesting: the gap between 3 leaders is closing. I wish them safe downhill!

2:30a local CTR time & EP/JB are about 19 miles from the finish line neck & neck!! Mostly downhill from here, but I don't know the trail. Jesse isn't too far back, perhaps 7 miles or so. So inspiring to watch these 3 duke it out. Wish I could stay up for the finish, but it's time for some zzzz's.

Jefe wakes Ethan up, and the race is on!  They will likely finish within minutes of each other, and both are gonna be under 4 days unless something nutty happens.

Jesse's made up a lot of ground, and his nighttime DH skills are gonna be put to the test shortly!  Guess I'll see how it turns out when I wake up in the morning.

4:30 am local time - looks like Jefe widened a lead over Ethan (487 to 482) and must be just a few miles away.

Looks like sub-4 days!  Super phenomenal.

5:30 am, looks like Ethan is stopped again somewhere near the top of the E. fork of Junction Crk.  Bike trouble?  Sleeping?

Jefe's spot hasn't moved in an hour - sleeping?  batteries out?  just bad reception and is he gonna pop out at Junction Creek any moment?!!

Jesse's spot hasn't move in 2.5 hours - sleeping?  batteries out?  Is he now in the mix?!

Way better than the Olympics!  Those Olympians have nothing on ANY of these riders stretched out between Leadville and Durango...

Fighting off the  sleepy1 to try to see the finish...

I'm seeing Jefe at the end! I think he made it with 5 minutes to spare for a sub 4 day depending on how long it took for his spot to update after arriving.

Well done Jefe you monster  headbang Inspirational  thumbsup
