Anyone know what happened to Kurt's blue dot on Trackleaders.com?!?! Went to check on him this morning, and it's gone.

Yeah, he's back! But the yellow (not blue) dot hasn't updated in 9+ hours...

Kurt called us about 7 PM MDT from Silverton.  He wasn't aware that his SPOT only worked for an hour this morning.  He had put fresh batteries in it last night, and it seemed OK this morning, so he doesn't know why it's not transmitting.  He really enjoyed the beauty of today's section, but had to do a lot of hike-a-bike.  He said "the CT is fun if you sleep a lot."  And he also said that Jefe is a legend among the hikers for finishing in 4 days!

I would like to give public props to Les Handy for the ride home from Durango. He gave me and Roland a ride back to Denver on Aug 9th. Thanks man trail magic after the race ends is just as appreciated as it is during the event.

Oh and nice efforts in the AZT300 and CTR as well Les.

Looks like ITT hiker Shawn Forry is cruising. Must be cool not to bypass the wilderness areas!

Trackleader classifies him as "unsupported." Anyone know if this means that he's skipping all resupply points?

My understanding is that he is gunning for Paul Pomeroy's unsupported record.  Ambient water is the only thing he will be collecting along the trail - started with 15ish days worth of food on his back!!

Very cool. I'm looking forward to following him!

Here are some thoughts from riding the CTR this year: http://tobygadd.blogspot.com/2012/08/lessons-from-2012-colorado-trail-race.html

Don't worry--nothing about rules, ethics, etc. Just some lessons from the trail.

Cheers,
Toby

I have a couple of friends in it. I'm going to try and catch one of my more demented friends headbang on course next weekend for some photos while he RUNS it.

Finally.....I finished my blog report.  It took me longer than the race itself.  Warning.......long winded.  I'll have more in regards to equipment and other nuances.

There is about to be a new unsupported foot record set on the CT. Shawn Forry is currently at around 10 days with looks like less than 50 miles to go. Trackers says he is averaging 46 miles a day. Pretty damn impressive.

I wonder what 15ish days of food looks like?? Only gets lighter as you go though I suppose...

I wonder if that is faster than can be done by bike?  All food + no detours?  50k' calories is a lot of weight!

I've been wondering the same thing. Might have to revert to high-capacity panniers to find out!

Shawn is almost there. Hugely impressive to watch over the last 10 days.

He has a detailed look at the equipment and food aspect of the attempt on his blog.

Toby, I know you have semi seriously talked about a true unsupported class for CTR etc.. we might all have to reconsider what a
real bike packing adventure looks like.

Great fun either way.

I bet, with a light enough bike, you could go faster on a no-detour route with a bike, even when hiking with it strapped to your back (in Wilderness areas, etc), than without. I don't really know if it would be kosher to try,

Carrying a bike through the wildernesses of the CT is probably a no-no.  Stefan did a supported full route before he setup CTR, but his bike was transported around wilderness.  IIRC it took him 9 days.  Sounds way more fun than unsupported, I might add Wink

The wording goes something like. It shall be unlawful to posses. So even if your not riding your in violation. The reason we get to carry the Canyon is that's it's Park but not Wilderness. There's no way you could do the whole AZT either. Not legally.

No doubt it could physically be done but it would be tough on either one. Now having support and getting to have not only the bike but supplies delivered now that's the way to go.
