Is this worth another thread? I ask because this is something I've been thinking about in regards to the show. I would love, and hope, to get more sponsorship for the show but would "CTR coverage is sponsored by Uncle Joe's Chain Lube!" tarnish the spirit of these races as well? There's already some minor advertising associated with these races. Most visibly, banner ads on this site and trackleaders.com have been in place for quite a while. I see an important distinction between site operators making a few bucks to support their hosting services, and the outright commercialization of feature-length movies, etc. MTBCast provides a great service--and I've contributed to support it. If it becomes an ad-driven site, then I'd stop donating. But I'd still post call-ins during races if the site only had a few banner ads. Audio ads might make me think twice before calling in, or listening to calls, depending on the format. Personally, I keep my blog ad-free. Yes, I could make a few bucks with it. I could probably even charge people to download my GPX files. But, for me at least, that's not what this sport is all about. I really like the open, helpful, and sharing vibe of bikepacking races. It's about US and what we do out there--not about a lube company's marketing plan. |

I appreciate the feedback. If I had any kind of ads on the show they would be, or at least I would seek out, those entities that are relevant to this aspect of the sport. Bikepacking and endurance racing is a unique sub-category of sorts and one that I think should have it's own focus. Just as road-centric products make no sense on a mountain bike page/blog/show, perhaps big air shocks and BMX products have little relevance to the CTR and TD. In the end, though, having it clean and user-supported might be more desirable for the listener. |

I just checked on Chrissy's dot and she hasn't moved in 2 hours. Then I checked my phone and she somehow got a text message to me! Here it is verbatim: Raining for last 24 h. Frozen. Huddled up in a sheep herders trailer and may find the yurt and dry out today. Close to hypothermia. : (
She's a tough girl and is smart. She knows what she has to do to get warm again and if she's not warming she knows what she has to do to get out of there. She's not that far from Spring Creek Pass and getting to Creede or Lake City isn't that far from there. She can obviously use her fingers enough to send texts so that's good. IIRC she has a rain jacket, I think she left her rain pants at home this time around. Racing with and knowing Chrissy, the only thing I worry about is if she runs out of food while warming up and drying out, but since she knows that I had to turn around almost at this exact spot last year because I had too few calories left I'm sure she stocked up with extra leaving BV. In fact if she does go to Lake City or Creede, I half expect her to warm up and stock up on food and return to the trail! Maybe there's some nice sheep wool around there she can stuff in her jacket for extra warmth? Man, I've been up late every night watching her dot and checking throughout each day, but now I am totally fixated on it! |

It's currently 50°F and raining in Lake City, that means it's got to be in the 30's or 40's up at Chrissy. Pretty much the most miserable riding weather is 30's and raining.

She's at just above 12k feet right now, she has a small descent and then a steady climb to 13k feet. Hopefully she can keep a steady pace up the climb and generate some heat, that will get her feeling great.

Looks like Christina is chilling in the Yurt now. I spotted it last Wednesday and it definitely looked like a sweet place to hole up. Hopefully it'll stop raining and a clear window can open up so she can make a storm free push to Silverton. At least she has a formidable shelter to take cover in. A spot forecast near Coney Summit on weather.gov doesn't indicate that it'll be snowing at the highest point on the CT. However, it does show that heavy rain is occurring. |

Anyone know what's up with Nick Woodland? His SPOT shows that he hopped onto Hwy 50 before starting the Fooses Creek climb and is currently making his way towards the sprawling metropolis of Sargents. At least he'll be able to seek refuge from the elements at the Tomichi Creek Trading Post in Sargents should he so desire.
