The only constant environmental discouragement, Joey, was the regular 2pm-5pm rain.  Pretty sure you're already familiar with that.... Wink

I can concur that C.B. last weekend was pretty clear Wink

B.V. seemed fairly OK on Sat. as well. Nothing I really noticed, while going over the pass, or in town.

I dunno, Matt... sixteen hours is what you'll have, and I'm thinking sixteen hours is pretty damn close to what it will take even for the fastest guys (you, Jesse, Ethan, Jefe, et al).  If you had a perfect first day and felt really good, I think you could make it with a couple hours to spare.  But those couple hours could disappear pretty quickly if something happened, or if you weren't going quite as fast as normal...
You guys think we should move the start even earlier?  The objective here is that anyone gunning for the 5.0 day mark or less can hit Silverton by 8pm. I want it to be realistic/attainable goal.

I was wondering the same thing.  Has anyone on here ridden from Durango to Silverton with a fair amount of impetus behind the effort?  How long did it take?

I'm fine with 4am but I'll probably be one of the first people there to buy out all the peanut M&M's!

This I the big question I have, I think it's attainable to do 85 miles in 16 hours, but were dealing with a lot of vert. This is tough as I know someone is going to arrive just as the store closes.

I think the earlier the better - just: when is the early start going to impact the sleep of folks just getting into town on Sat.? Y'all gonna be sleep-deprived during the entire race. Starting the race w/sleep dep. usually ends in a bad way.

I think 4 is early enough.  Even if the start is at 3, I'm guessing the vast majority of the field wont make it to silverton by the time stores close anyway....  Moving the start even earlier helps just a few...

When do the stores open in Silverton? If arriving too late Sunday, that dictates how early of a start one can get up Stoney Pass...

The Chamber of Commerce website lists both San Juan Services (convenience store) and Silverton Grocery as opening at 7am.

Caveat: I'm going southbound, not north. And I'm certainly not going to be breaking records. So I've got no skin in the game on this one.

That said, it seems like this is all part of the challenge of tackling the trail in the opposite direction. Who's going to be better off: the guy that packs light and blitzes the ride to Silverton, only to not quite make closing time? Or the guy who packs heavy, almost certainly arriving after closing time, and is able to just carry on through? Choices, choices... all part of the challenge. It can be legs or logistics that can make the race. Now back to my armchair...

I can confirm that the gas station and the grocery store both open at 7am.  FYI the gas station stays open till 9pm and the grocery store closes at 8pm.

I just finished preparing a new GPX files that contains the latest waypoints from to 2013 Databook. But before I post it, Stefan is checking to make sure that it's accurate. Once I get his approval, I'll update my blog with a 10,000-point version and a 20X500-point version.

ah lets move it to 6am and up the *risk* for the fastest people. There's nothing but junk food in that town anyway.
Seriously though, I'm for sticking with 6am.

Looks good to me.  I simplified it to 8,000 points (in case any last minute detours require .gpx files as older units can only handle 20x500) and also made a split 16x500 version and posted it to the website.  The only difference seems to be the waypoints, so if you don't care about 'em, don't worry about downloading the new file.

Thanks, Toby! And Thanks Jerry Brown for the new waypoints to go with the new databook!

Oooh Time Splits. Killer. Y'all gonna list SoBos (starting in Waterton Canyon), or are those gonna be listed simply as "ITTers"?

Hey! I don't see your name listed, Scott! Wink
