Every year, I worry that someone on the CTR will be struck by lighting. There are so many exposed areas (Monarch Crest, Coney, Indian Ridge, etc.), and some racers seem to ride straight through electrical storms.

There are ways to mitigate the risk. Here's my favorite article: http://rendezvous.nols.edu/files/Curriculum/research_projects/BackcountryLightningSafety.pdf

Yeah, it's long and a little technical. But you'll be glad that you read it when the sky starts booming.

In most other regards, the CTR is actually pretty safe. Sure, it's possible to get messed up from a hard crash. But lightning can kill you, and there's a lot of it on the Colorado Trail. Careful out there--no race is worth your life.

OK - I'm in. I'll send SPOT info to Scott soon.

It was touch and go until today. My Achilles and knee have been pretty pissed since finishing the TD. They started to make a turnaround on Monday. A 65-mile ride today felt OK, so I'll be in Durango.

I hope to finish this triple crown thing. I hear there is huge prize money.  Wink

As far as start time...I'm a Clydesdale (http://www.bicycling.com/mountainbikecom/featured-stories/clydesdale) and making it to Silverton before 9pm is freaking me out. I'd hate to be stuck in Silverton until morning and then get to the next ridge line at over 13K ft when t-storms are forming.

Is the start time debate over? If not, I'd be down with a 2am or 3am start.

I'm sure nothing will go wrong on day 1 and I'll suddenly have the climbing ability of you little sh*ts. But having some buffer would take a lot of stress off.

Yes, group start is set at 4am.  I'm concerned also about making Silverton by 8pm, but I'm gonna give it my best shot.

For anyone who *really* wants to hit Silverton by 8pm, but doesn't think they can make it leaving Durango at 4am, I would suggest signing on as an ITT and simply starting a few hours earlier than the group. You'd miss the group roll-out, but you'll still feel part of the race for sure as there will be a lot of us up there Sunday.

I'm just packing four days of food from the start and forgetting Silverton altogether.  It's not worth it to me to carry a single day's less worth of food to try and make it to a place with *limited* food options - when I could just carry everything I'd prefer from the get-go.  Also, much less stress this way...

Oh, and as for the Cateract/Coney segments - we've been getting storms EARLY in the mountains the last couple weeks, and even during the night at times.  If this weather pattern holds, it would be ideal to hit 23/22 in the wee hours.  Unless you got an odd nice day, all day, I think leaving Silverton in the morning could make for a scary day above treeline.

Forest,

First off I'm sooooooo stoked for you Eric, and Max going for one of the hardest three races on a bike in one season. I followed you all on the AZT after I road the 300, but did not hear much about the Tour. I really think you guys are something special and hope nothing but the best on the CTR. Especially hope the achilles and knee are healing, you don't want to let that big prize money go to waste.... hehe. Personally I think you can make it to Sliverton by 8pm but I think a lot of us are packing to be safe. Cheers and hope to see you in Dtown.

Joey, that is a lot of food to pack. Just curious what food variety are you going to carry?

Cya Saturday morning.

Toby, thanks for the lightning article - helpful, if a bit nerve-wracking!  Lightning has long been my #1 fear in the backcountry.

Jeff, yep, that's a lot of food to pack.  So is three days' worth out of Silverton, without the ability to thoroughly pick and choose what you can bring, and the ability to pre-pack/re-pack as well as you can before the start.  I'm bringing lots of dried food - dried fruit, nuts, jerky - as well as some bagels, peanut butter, cheese, PB pretzels (salty and appetizing), some Clif bars, even a few tangerines.  Everyone has a different way of going about this part of it - if you have a small stove and don't mind cooking, dehydrated food (couscous, etc) could be a great way to pack lots without the water weight.

Cya Saturday morning.

Are you coming over Saturday?  Probably just a typo, but race is Sunday!

Joey,
Exactly what types of food I was thinking of carrying and but still mulling the idea of pedaling straight through Silverton and into the wild. LOL!!
I meant Sunday morning but will be there early Saturday afternoon to prep any last minute items. We will come by the shop.

I'll have to ask my friend/former co-worker Kurt Sandiforth (currently touring in South America) about that... Wink

Seriously, though, if anyone here has been curious what the bicycle-tourist-turned-endurance-racer (for a season) has been up to since he disappeared after blazing the triple-crown trail, check out his blog:

Justin's Vanilla Almond Butter.

I have heard the Siren Song. Pack some of that up. It tastes literally like liquified cookies. I've never said, "Gee, I'm going to eat this enter jar of peanut butter, right here, right now", but I needed two full grown men to stop me from finishing off a jar of this stuff.

And then I went on a rampage, looking for more.

Unless you're allergic to almonds, then don't do this.

Anyone have a spreadsheet with the water and resupply mileages from Durango to Denver?  I can't find the one I made on my computer or the one I got from the Colorado trail website last year.  It would be a lot of help.
Thanks,
Eric

Foster,

Do you have a Colorado Trail Databook?

I have a 4th edition I can bring you if you want it. It just doesn't have the bicycle detours.

Thanks, Matt.  Definitely food on the bike this time.  No backpack.  I think the amount of stuff on my back during the first go around nearly ruined my hands for life!

I put down a few thoughts about taking on the CT. http://grizzlyadam.net/2013/07/colorado-now.html

I'm a mess right now. Excited, nervous, moody. I just need to start pedaling (and HABing)!

See you nutjobs in Durango.

Here's a nice article on CTR from the local Durango paper:

http://www.durangotelegraph.com/index.cfm/second-section/colorado-trail-race/

It's great when a journalist really does their homework and takes the effort to understand the 'event.'

We are overnighting more SPOTs in case anyone else still wants to rent one!  Last minute!  Drop me an email ASAP.
