I'm in for an ITT Southbound starting about a week later. I was planning on a weekday start and am not worried about 285. I did it last year and 285 was not a big deal to me. But then again I tend to be a bit oblivious at times My vote is to keep 285 in but it won't stop me to take the other detour either. I do like the idea of comparing my times though with last year. If Tarryall comes in then I'll probably rethink start day/time.

Just curious - is there any re-supply option at all on (or near) the Tarryall route? Gas station/commercial fishing hut/camping/rv area w/convenience store/etc?
Marshall said it, two options on Tarryall road, limited everything. The Stagestop is a hoot and worth a visit if nothing else, last time I went through there I got a PBR draft and a bag of chips - about all that was available. A mouse also crawled out of the sink drain in the bathroom... There was another place on Tarryall road closer to Tarryall...cabins for rent or something with a decent store up front. I wouldn't count on either for much though.

Marshal's right. After riding the singletrack from Kenosha (for the northbound folks) you will eventually get to a dirt road (maybe 5 or so miles in). This will start the long detour around Lost Creek. You will ride a dirt road for several miles and then turn left on pavement and start heading towards Taryall Reservoir. Not long after hitting that pavement, there will be a bar on the south side of the road. Decent food. There is also a really small place with cabins to rent maybe another 10ish miles after that. It's right on Taryall Creek and you can get ice cream, pop and Gatorade. That's it. Although you can also get some stuff at Wellington Lake if the time is right but I wouldn't count on much.

That's the place. He was closed in 2008 when I came by but he cooked me up a kick ass Philly Cheese Steak but I do recall that place being dirty. There was also a mean ass dog there too that was IN the bar. I also had a cold beer.

I promise you, there will be no demonstration from me. Yeah, I'm a mortal too. The idea of riding a rigid fixie on the CTR makes my brain bleed. Anyone who can pull that off in good style will make the rest of us look like posers.

I voted for 285 just because I like consistency in terms of measuring one's self from year to year, but, in the end, I really don't care. I just hope to be lining it up in Durango in the latter part of July with all of you yahoos!

Who you calling a yahoo? I like consistency also. Now I'll have to think more to find the route! And I don't like to (can't?) think much.

So glad Tarryall is being considered! I had always wondered why 285 was ever included (now elucidated by Stefan). I am totally in for the race this year, albeit southbound, and would much rather be riding dirt and/or remote pavement. I would love to see it become the standard race route, previous time/record comparability be damned. I'll cross my fingers...

285 is not nearly as bad northbound, but I still voted for Tarryall to keep things interesting. Do we have a rough estimate of how much time it should add to the course?

Do we have a rough estimate of how much time it should add to the course? 50 more miles of relatively easy riding, so I'm guessing anywhere from 5 to 8 hours, not counting extra time it may take to carry all your food from Leadville or Copper if your timing is bad... ;-)

Nice! I already voted for Tarryall. That photo makes me even more glad. Did a short forest road overnight tour in Utah last weekend... lots of pretty forest service roads, similar to the above.

Me too. Anyone have the info for the Leadville bypass? Looks like only 3 stops: Silverton, Buena and Copper. I tried looking on google maps for the 5a but couldn't determine the route. John

Leadville can still be a stop if you choose. It just seems so close to B.V. that it might be nice not to have to go all the way up and into town if you don't need the resupply. The bypass is pretty simple - follows the RR tracks, crosses them, then keeps going north. I'll post up a GPX to the site eventually. I may have the rd name (5a) wrong...

May 1st, and the results are in!
Tarryall - 31 US-285 - 13
Clearly ya'll would much rather ride Tarryall, so let's do it! I voted Tarryall as well, and I have a feeling that the memory of voting this way will feel quite poignant when crossing 285 at Kenosha pass and knowing that Bailey is just a coast down the road. Oh man....

Sweet! I'm guessing our resident GPS'ing guru will be recording a .gpx of the detour as well. :-)
