Sweet! I'm guessing our resident GPS'ing guru will be recording a .gpx of the detour as well.  :-)
Yep, that's the plan. If the snow ever stops!

This beats 285 any day  Wink

Any place in the mountains of Colorado can look inviting in a picture.  But don’t think the entire Tarryall detour is going to be as nice as this picture (but the detour is like that for the 1st 10 miles—& even has some fast fun ST).  But after that 1st 10 miles or so-- the slog begins…………

Personal I would prefer to bomb down 285, do a quick re-fuel at Bailey and be back on the remaining 30 or so miles of sweet ST, all in a couple of short hours. That verses adding a potential day slog on sun baked pavement followed by up/down gravel roads thru burnt out forest.

As someone who also lives in the area I know 1st hand few will ever ride the entire detour separate from the CT.

Leadville can still be a stop if you choose.  ...  The bypass is pretty simple - follows the RR tracks, crosses them, then keeps going north.  I'll post up a GPX to the site eventually. I may have the rd name (5a) wrong...

Apologies, I must have missed something ... what is this Leadville bypass?  I had thought only Tarryall was being considered.

I believe this would be the route if you don't need supplies in town.

https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=County+Road+11%2FHalfmoon+Rd&daddr=39.2702341,-106.3252765+to:US-24+W&hl=en&ll=39.244086,-106.305771&spn=0.077772,0.154324&sll=39.207783,-106.358643&sspn=0.077813,0.154324&geocode=FQBgVgIdbQSp-Q%3BFVo3VwId5Jqp-Sk1lDNqipBqhzF3Kie_mfRfOQ%3BFdOVVwIdq5Gp-Q&mra=dme&mrsp=0&sz=13&via=1&t=m&z=13

Not going through town saves 2.2 miles.

Yes!  Everything else stays the same.  Only difference would be Tarryall in exchange for US-285.

Sorry, I'm still a bit confused - is official route no longer going right through Leadville?  I had thought Stefan said only the Tarryall portion was going to potentially change.

From the CTR website (http://www.climbingdreams.net/ctr/):

Holy Cross / Mount Massive Wilderness Detour - Head right on Halfmoon Creek Road, then right on Hwy-300.
Option 1: Bypass Leadville by going left on CR-5A straight up to US-24.
Option 2: Go into Leadville and back out on US-24.
Once on US-24 north of leadville, go left on FS-100, then right on Wurtz Ditch road and intersect segment 9
.

So, for those who don't want to stop for delicious goodies in downtown Leadville, you can bypass all of the chaos and traffic.

Exactly.  If you just restocked in B.V. in the morning and can make it to Copper by the evening, no need to ride a few extra miles into Leadville.  I just wanted to make it clear that this is an acceptable option, though I imagine most folks will go into Leadville.

Looks like construction on road 77. My vote won't change, a midday nap will be in order anyway.

hmm.... this could be interesting. Guy B is 40 minutes behind guy A. Guy A has to wait for 40 minutes because of the construction...Guy B catches up to Guy A right when they open the road again.

It's not the first time that road construction has caused delays on the CTR. In 2010, the road out of Silverton was being worked on, with long delays between pilot cars. While waiting, I took the opportunity to eat and lube my chain.

Yeah, but not before slathering it with my special extra-virgin olive oil & sun-dried chain lube. Amazing what tastes good after 400 miles!

I'm planning to race this year and with the 2013 group start heading eastbound, my vote would be to stick with 285. Should be a quick drop on pavement and hopefully not at night?! But after reading of this epic sounding road construction on the Tarryall detour, my vote may be moot now anyways….? Maybe a good idea though for the next time the group heads westward. Stoked to see you all out there!! headbang

Hmmm.  A bit torn now... I'd much prefer the Tarryall route, I think (not having ridden it, I reserve the right to change my mind afterwards), but I'm not too keen on the idea of hanging out and waiting for road construction.  It's only forty minutes out of days of riding, but still - it's nice to go when you want to go, and stop when you want to stop.

Yeah, besides waiting, riding through construction zones is rarely pleasant and sometimes unsafe.  There could be pilot car or other issues that complicate things.

Hadn't even thought of the pilot car/average speed issue.  If it's a longer section all being worked on at once and they're expecting a motor vehicle's average speed, we riders could really throw a wrench in their traffic system.

Also, sometimes crews have insisted that cyclists ride in the pilot car, forcing them to not complete the route under their own power.  This has caused 'rules' conundrums in the past.

seems like we need a guinea pig to check it out when they start the construction.  I'm sure the plans for this construction can be found somewhere too.
I've never been on that road, but from what I see on street view, it doesn't look like a road that gets much traffic... probably even less so during construction.
sometimes if there is a pilot car, the stop sign guys will let you go without the pilot car with the agreement that you will get off the road and out of they way when the pilot car comes through with the traffic....
the only places I've seen them be really strict about not letting a bike through is when there was vertical rock walls on the side of the road with land slides
really just one way to really find out what the situation is really like... go try riding it and see how it goes.
