CTR14: Dominic Lauzier called in from near Blank’s Cabin enjoying the good visibility! He’s going into Salida.

Thanks! I'm really enjoying driving around this year and meeting some of the bike shop guys along the way. Joey, Devin, and Scot! Good folks keeping the local scene supplied as well as the racers!

So, I may be totally wrong here - but how do the records work when the course is completed in the other direction?

Regardless of Neil's finishing time, doesn't he create the new record for this exact course in the Denver to Durango direction? Or is it the same record times from this course being done in the opposite direction (2013)?

Excellent question.  No idea what the answer is, but I look forward to finding out.

I think its a new record since this course has yet to be raced.

I thought "only 45 miles?" as you do when you're watching the CTR.  (In my other life, 45 miles seems like a long way.)  Hope I'm still up when he finishes!  I'd hate to miss the end of such an incredible, hopefully record-setting, run.  Go, Neil, go!  But be safe!

Just talked to Neil...

He has not travelled very far tonight (about 40 miles to the finish) and that is largely due to a possible lateral knee injury. He called at about 2:30am saying that his knee was really bothering him (8 out of 10 pain level). He took a full dose of ibuprofen and slept for about an hour and a half hoping that when he woke up his knee would feel better. He called again at 4:30am saying that his knee was now up to a pain level of 10 and that he had tried many times but could not pedal. He tried to tape it up but he is soaking wet and the tape wasn't sticking at all. He said any amount of stress he puts on the knee is causing major shakiness and instability. He doesn't remember a specific event in which this injury occurred, but obviously happened on the trail at some point.

Neil is walking the remaining 40 miles to the finish (hopefully pedaling some of the descents). I wanted to post here as I know many of you will wake up wondering why his dot hasn't moved very far - but he is indeed pushing on to the finish.

Thanks so much for the update.  My admiration for Neil's run has just gone up another notch, and it was pretty high to begin with.  After pedaling so hard and so far, to walk in.  What a mensch.

Walking in 40 miles on a knee with a pain 10 out of 10...damn, that's going to hurt. Tough dude.

Are CM and TL really making that wrong turn on Jarosa Mesa?

Bummer about Neil for sure. 10 out of 10 on the pain scale seems like justification enough to quit, even for someone as tough as he is.  At least he's in a good spot at the moment for someone to pick him up. Hard to imagine making it through the next section with that much pain.

Hope he's okay and maybe with some walking the pain will ease up. Major bummer to be so close to finish.

Might be an overuse injury if he hasn't crashed. One tough dude to push through that much pain, and an incredible athlete.
