Really sorry to hear Neil is having a tough go at it right now. My house is only a mile from the trailhead and it is positively dumping rain and is only 60 degrees. I hope he has the food/gear he needs to stay warm on the way down.

Bummer!  I wondered what was up - figured he hit the sleep wall.  Didn't count on injury.

Re: Records, as far as I know this will be a new record for the current course, since it hasn't been raced southbound before.

Talked to Neil again - he doesn't think he has the food to take him to the finish. He is going to try some things out as far as getting on his bike, but he just cannot pedal. If he could get to the descent, he thinks he may be able to ride to the finish, but that requires at least 15 more miles of HAB which could take a long time. He is wet and freezing cold.

I am leaving to drive from Durango to Cortez now, forest road 435 off of hwy 145 will take me almost all the way to orphan butte. If he doesn't feel better by the time he makes it there, he said it may not be realistic and he may have to DNF Sad

I will keep you all posted.

He's at MM 527.8. How far to the finish? Really hope he can pull through after such a monster effort.

I really hope that he doesn't permanently injure himself
He is young and had a lifetime of riding ahead of him
Any pain that rates  10 is likely very serious.

Been a few years but I don't recall a spot where you can bail from where he is at. I don't even see any side roads on the map.

Oh man, what a bummer! He has *so* much momentum heading into the dark last night. He's so close, but I feel the same as Toby...these races aren't worth serious overuse injuries. I'll be sending some happy-knee-vibes his way this morning!

Hang in there Neil. Hope you get out safely or finish without doing serious damage. DNF or no it doesn't matter. You rode a hell of a ride and we all know it.

I'm bummed there aren't more women on the course this year but nice efforts by Jill and Beth.  Getting to the start line is a challenge in itself!

Stay strong Katie, I'm cheering for you!

Was just on the phone with Jeff Hemperley, he said that the last good bail point would be Hillside Drive (rd 436) off of hwy 145. He could take a two right turns and be to a car within a mile. After that he is kind of committed.

I am hoping that I hear from him again before that opportunity passes. He has called every time he feels uncomfortable so I wouldn't doubt he will call again soon-ish.

Tell him he's a badass as far as we are concerned no matter what he decides.

Getting to Kennebec Pass opens up a lot more options for emergency bailout.  For sure someone with a jeep or truck will be up there, even in this mess.

I cant imagine the conditions up there now.

When I posted that,  he was right next to Forest Road 564--which is a decent-looking road. I remember riding past it on my previous two CTR finishes. I've seen cars on it, along with people parked at trailheads.

Edit: If you look at satellite view, there's even a car parked by the road.

Halfway through Indian Trail Ridge now... truly a few more small climbs, one thousand-footer out of Walls Gulch, and the rest is coast-able.  No doubt it sucks to be walking, in serious pain, in the rain, above treeline - but he's so damn close.  Come on Neil, push through it!

I walked to the shop this morning in the rain, pushing my bike, as an internal symbol of solidarity... but then again I love riding in bad weather, in the middle of nowhere, so this whole finish is getting me revved up. Wink

If I recall, Dave Harris walked and coasted down from Indian Ridge--and made great time. There are only a few climbs, and not much pedaling from Kennebec to the the trailhead. So if Neil can get to Kennebec without destroying his knee, then he'll probably make it to Durango.

I just hope that he's not wrecking his knee. He's of that age when some people push hard enough to develop lifetime injuries. Those of us who have them generally regret it as we age.
