Joey, yes! I'm not teaching this summer, so I'll be in Durango. Looking after Jay's house while he's in Greece in June. I'll be there for the ddc too.

Sorry. I'm new to using a forum and new to CTR too. I hope this is the right way to post a question. Ok... I have a Garmin 800 that I was hoping to use for navigation (along with the CTR data book as well). Does anyone have any experience using a Garmin 800? Do I need to download some map or something? Or can I just download the gpx file? I've used the Garmin to get around other mountain bike rides (much shorter) and have done well. Just wondering if anyone else has used before and has any advice to offer. I'll also take suggestions for more detailed maps than what are provided in the CTR guidebook.

Hi Candence, I haven't used the 800 but I am a Garmin user- Specific feedback about your model aside, navigation on the CT is not "very" difficult except for a few, key places....(and these are confusing and should be researched!) I would expect any rider relying on GPS to have both the GPX track AND base maps loaded on to your device for the race. Without the base maps, you're just following the purple line with no clear context and if you get off track, you can get lost quickly and not know how to turn it around....BTDT. IMHO, the data book is really the go to source on the CT- very comprehensive and clear.....it really is like Fisher Price- My First Trail Guide.....clear, concise and well worth the donation/investment to the CTF. The only thing that I sometimes wish for is a larger, paper map of the areas I'm traveling thru.....Yes, the base maps are all you need for nav, but sometimes I like to just look out at the view an orient myself...I find that hard to do zooming out on the GPS screen- A paper map fulfills my impulsive need to be like "what's that peak over there? Is that buttercup town in the distance?" etc....also good when I forget to change batteries. So navigation is straight forward, BUT....as mentioned above, there are some tricky spots. I don't feel it's a service to you/or anyone else to call those spots out...racing self support is about putting in the time to ensure your success.... research the threads on this site and read CTR athletes' TRs from around the inter webs and you'll quickly discover where those critical junctions, misplaced blazes and old school signs still trip people up.... Way to do your homework sister!  Michael |
