I use the free app PDF Maps on my iPhone as a backup to my Garmin. You can save the GPS track as a KML file to a folder on Dropbox, then download it to the app. The app also allows you access to a ton of free or paid maps (all USGS topo maps are free), which you download and then overlay the KML file. You can do this in advance for the entire route. And the phone's GPS shows you your location. It works great.
Also, in regards to food choices, I've been experimenting with some recipes out of the book Feed Zone Portables. Easy and delicious. I too am hoping to go the route of starting with 3 days worth of food, homemade good food - after several of these races, my stomach can no longer handle massive amounts of gas station crap.

Howdy!
This is devin from Boneshaker cycles in Buena Vista. Since we're getting close to the CTR 2015 I thought we'd reach out and check in with you guys, since the race rolls past our front door every year.
We will be open our regular hours which is 9-6 Monday-Saturday, and 9-4 on sunday. We will also offer neutral support after hours, and i will post this on the door as well. My personal cell phone is 970-403-6563. I live close to the shop so a rider in need can get help any time.
Feel free to share this in the forums or whatever you think is best. Let us know how we can help!
Devin Dahl Boneshaker Cycles Buena Vista, CO 81211 719-966-5075
This is so awesome! I can vouch for Devin - the guy literally gave me one of his own wheels and a ride back to the shop from the trail when I had two broken spokes. I, of course, relegated myself from the race - but could not have continued on with my ride without him. The guy will help you - and is more than happy to do so since he used to manage a King Soopers or something and is now living his dream with his bike shop.

G'Day!
First post here. Also riding CTR will be my first time in the USA.
I'm planning on a relatively relaxed ride of CTR so I can enjoy the view. Hopefully without aggravating the compressed nerves I managed to give myself in the 2013 Transcontinental...
One thing I've failed to plan so far is working out how I'm going to get from Boulder to Durango before the depart. Unfortunately, I don't have enough time off work to ride there and back. Anyone got any suggestions?
Cheers, Tyno

If you can't get someone to give you a ride, try a rental from Avis. They seem to be more okay (much cheaper) with one way rentals

Nice video.
Less than a month out. I'm strangely excited and overwhelmed at the same time. Can't wait to start rolling.

I might be in the same boat. I'm thinking of taking the train (Amtrak) the Grand Junction, then a bus (roadrunnerstagelines.com) down to Durango. G'Day!

Hey everyone, I'm throwing my hat in the ring again this year. Planned on it last year, but was injured doing a stupid cross-fit workout about 1.5 months out. I have the day off work on Friday so I'm planning to take advantage of it. Dropped off a Kenosha on Thursday night and ride home (Littleton)from there. I've never seen the Tarryall detour, so I want to check it out. I'm scrambling to get re-acquainted with my GPS, LOL. Reminder for anyone else looking for it, the GPS track Toby made for the 2014 race is here: http://tobygadd.blogspot.com/2012/01/colorado-trail-race-gpsgpx-tracks-and.htmlNo course changes for 2015 right?

Everyone, just wanted to let you know that we won't have the Carver's breakfast this year! My friend Mike, who's a Carver co-owner and was my contact for two years ago, is out of town that weekend and I'm not sure the 2:00am breakfast was really worth it for them anyway... In any case, we're on for the 4:00am Velorution start! (1077 Main Avenue, in case you need to look it up.) I will try not to be too bummed as I watch you all ride away... Also, I'm planning on being open during the middle of the day on the Saturday before - we're normally closed, but just in case anyone needs anything last minute, I'll be there. I'm also keeping that Thursday and Friday open, repair-schedule-wise, for last minute emergencies. See you all soon!

No course changes for 2015 as far as I know! Thanks Stefan, I'm all signed up for my rental. There's the option for the Spot Gen 3 or the Spot Trace. Same battery life and reporting intervals. The only differences I can figure is the Gen 3 has the 911 and Ok buttons. Does the Gen 3 also have some way to indicate low battery? That would be a nice thing to have, the Trace doesn't have any buttons or indicator lights.

Both Gen 3 and Trace have LEDs for power and GPS. Both units will have the power LED flash red on low battery. The trace has a feature that lets it send a message for low battery because its primary use is to prevent theft (put on a boat or object that doesn't move for months. Once moved the trace starts tracking.) Both units work same for tracking just the Gen 3 has the SOS button.
Stefan - tracking page showing a 5am start time under the map. May want to change that to 4am.

Thanks for the updates guys. I'm sure the trackleader page will get updated. I don't actually have control of that, it's all trackleaders!
I've gotten a few questions about the .gpx track. The 2014 .gpx on Toby's blog is still the newest. I'm not aware of any new course updates.

How many pairs of cycling shorts do people bring? I have only gone on 3 day rides and am wondering how well one pair will hold up after 8 days. Is washing shorts in a stream advisable? I would worry about small amounts of silt.

I only plan on bringing one pair. I've heard of people bringing multiple pairs though.
