Woodland - Having heard a bit more of this story in the shop today, I'd be totally with Toby on this one... there has got to be an uncrossable line somewhere. Especially when records are potentially at stake.
Nanath - I miss the weather layer too. Wonder why Scott doesn't have it up this year?

I cannot believe that Jesse is descending into the Platte canyon right now. Absolutely insane. Did not imagine this possible. I guess I don't feel bad about him riding away from me in the DDC every year...
Lots of strong rides happening this year. Nice work everyone!
Has anyone had any contact with a SPOT-less rider on a basic hardtail, disposable water bottle, Carradice-style seat bag, who left Durango wearing a red cotton hoodie and black helmet? I didn't catch his name, as he was a little standoffish when I tried to talk with him. He mentioned riding "4000 touring miles" this year, and I was very intrigued, as he didn't fit the typical bikepacker profile, age-, gear-, or attitude-wise. Would love to know how he's doing.
Also, anyone seen Andre Michaud (Dr. Dre) out there?

And how do you run out of food heading up Los Pinos Pass? That seems to be some pretty poor planning...that is a LONG way from the next resupply. Scott is too busy riding his bike somewhere in Oregon it looks like (good on him!) - the weather layer is one of my favorites though... Jesse 'Superman' Jakomait. Does he wear a cape? He should - 'cause he's flyin.

Ah, in my experience here at one end of the CT, seeing people beginning, ending, and aborting attempts on the CT(R), poor planning is a pretty common thing. No offense intended to anyone, as it appears that some poor planning is a great way to lead to better planning on the next trip... but that line of reasoning goes out the window when it's time to race. Gotta be prepped and ready to play by the (very few) rules!
I am trying to imagine the mix of feelings Jesse must be having right now. Delirium? Elation? Exhaustion, certainly, but perhaps held at bay by the moment at hand... so crazy and awesome.

All I could think was what if Apple's not there, out of stuff, busy saving somebody else's ass, whatever. I wouldn't assume he was even there.

Go Jesse Go! Simply amazing!!! He is on Segment 2, just a short hop, step and a jump from the finish.
Not only is he breaking the 4 day barrier (which I thought would take a while to break with Taryall), he is crushing it!!! Anyone know where Matt is?

Bummed to say I'm held up in Copper right now with a busted rear hub - pawls not engaging, making horrible sounds. Was having a great run, good times battling with Denburg and Joe. Hoping to get it fixed in the am and continue on.

Drat, Aaron. You were/are having an incredible ride so far. Stinks when a mechanical takes you out for an extended period. Hopefully it'll get taken care of and you can get back at it early tomorrow. Yeah, my time estimate in jest is turning out to be just that. A joke! Plus, I had no idea how fast that section was. I'll guess around 12:15a local time now, but he's clearly on a mission. I can not begin to comprehend what it takes to put down an effort like that. I'm probably more in the 8-9 day crowd. Someday I'll find out for sure.

Where is Toby Gadd when we need him? Not to worry, Nick- we'll pick up his slack! Ethics are what you do when no one's looking- that was always at the core of Toby's jihad! Kref has called out Jeannie and Martin- sounds like Joey may know more? Are there other scofflaws out there? I'm sure of it..... Do. It. Yourself. bitches- cheaters suck.

I heard he turned around and is heading back to Durango. Something about his ride not being there yet and he didn't feel like waiting. Someone should stop him, he might be out of his mind.

My guess for Jefe would be about 1-2pm.
Don't forget that Matt Schiff is somewhere out there between Jesse and Jefe - finished already? Almost there? Crushed and seeing Jefe in his rearview? Who knows?
As for ethics, well, the least we can do is let the rider/riders in question give their version of the story* (this goes for any occasion/event/rider). But this particular one doesn't look good so far. As bikepacking gets more popular, I figure we're going to see more A) ignorance of the very basic rules we have in place, and B) purposeful flaunting of those rules simply for the results. If we care about how things are done, we will have to be a self-policing group, which is part of the reason I like the bikepacking community in the first place.
*(As the old-timers know, I was considered by Toby to have broken a rule in the 2011 CTR myself, although I maintain that doing the whole trail through a few-mile forestry work closure at night was preferable to shortcutting the trail [this was before Stefan posted a definite sign favoring the shortcut]. I made a conscious call to stick to the rules as I interpreted them - doing the route in its entirety. The point is, everyone should have their say before we castigate anyone.)

Congrats Jessie! It was awesome getting to watch that dot! Long time coming for this win!! Missed getting to see him riding up at Bolam Pass by about 30 minutes. Truly impressive how he could just accelerate. Really impressed by the kit he carried with just a frame bag, handlebar bag, and gas tank. Wonder what all he took?
Jefe is looking good and looks like he will finish in the few hours! This has been one of the best CTR's ever!

I just want to point out that the current 4-7th place in the field are all rookies. Joe Grant, Sam Koerber, Pappa Murphy and Alexandre Lussier. All around the 400mile mark. That doesn't factor in spotless riders but is still pretty cool. GO ROOKIES!!!
