I just want to point out that the current 4-7th place in the field are all rookies. Joe Grant, Sam Koerber, Pappa Murphy and Alexandre Lussier. All around the 400mile mark. That doesn't factor in spotless riders but is still pretty cool. GO ROOKIES!!!
seriously! that makes for an even more amazing top bunch of finishers....Bravo......you're all bad ass riders to do this!! |

@Erik---Thanks for identifying some of the rookies. Spot tracker used to have a "rookies" group, but it doesn't this year, which is a pity. I enjoy cheering them on!

JP is still looking good. It is impressive how he is just making it way through the Quadruple Crown (Iditarod, Arizona, Tour, Colorado). Also I wonder how the Pony Rustler is handling the CT. The 27+ platform looks like it could definitely be a great option for it!

Keep your eye on Dylan Taylor. He rode AZT, Tour Divide, and is set to complete CTR tomorrow to add his name to the short list of those who've done all three in one year - the Triple Crown Challenge. Not only is he set to finish the Triple Crown, he's also set to destroy the current record held by Kurt Sandiforth by somewhere in the range of three days. I'm out, officially. Local shops don't have the parts I need to fix the rear hub. Definitely not happy to drop, but I could not have had a more incredible time out there. Aside from a little rain the first morning, the weather was spectacular. Rode much of the time with Joe and the other Aaron - Joe was suffering mightily on his fully rigid bike but never quit moving and had an awesome, upbeat attitude the whole time. Denburg is a machine and has perfected the art of relentless forward progress. Rode several hours into Silverton with Jefe - pretty awesome to meet and ride with someone of his pedigree. Didn't expect my second CTR experience to exceed my first, but it did, even with a DNF. To everyone still out there, ride strong and finish!

Woodland - Having heard a bit more of this story in the shop today, I'd be totally with Toby on this one... there has got to be an uncrossable line somewhere. Especially when records are potentially at stake. Toby had it right, even if it didn't always come across in a palatable way for certain people. Thanks Kurt for putting this situation out there. Peer pressure is the only mechanism we have to maintain the integrity of these events. Not that anyone is a bad person for riding their own ride - they aren't as long as they aren't claiming a clean ride or a clean time. Three hours sleep in three days and fast as hell. Unbelievable athlete. |

That's correct, freeskier, but I figure JP is always in the spotlight so that may not have been new news. I was just putting in a cheer for my bud, Dylan. And as for Robert, Alice, and Mark, I really should have been paying closer attention to them. What a treat! Bottom line: Anyone who can train to ride 3500+ miles of endurance riding in a 3.5 month window (as well as take that much time off work!) is deserving of serious praise. My hat is off to them all! |

Yeah, I'm always wondering how to take that much time off! I will have to quiz Dylan later...  Nice job from the Triple Crowners. Maybe my buddy Kurt S. will have to come out of retirement - his original TC effort was pretty laid back, as I recall. Sounded like a great way to spend the summer! Toby often was correct, Majcolo, although he had this infuriating inability to see grey areas, which do exist from time to time (not always!). |

Huge congrats to Jesse.....sub 4 days is really unbelievable and the ability to forgo sleep is hard to imagine. Pretty incredible athlete!!
And Roland bagging some 14'ers out there?? Way to get after it and add to the suffer quotient.
Awesome job by the Triple Crowners and Dylan T. is laying down another solid performance.
Toby G. never had it wrong and our self-regulated rules are just not that difficult to understand. It is about integrity and doing the right thing and when riders fail to uphold our simple bikepacking ethos they need to be called out. Or educated...

Incredible ride Jesse! I think I speak for everyone when I say how stunning a 3d20h ride is, particularly on the longest course in CTR history. This is the 3rd huge perspective changer about what is possible on the CT. The first was Owen Murphy when he blew away the 5 day barrier, seemingly with ease, riding a 4d08h in 2008. He missed a tiny piece of the course, but his time was nonetheless jaw-dropping. Then Jefe took it under 4 days - absolutely inconceivable when the race started in 2007. After reinstating the Tarryall detour in 2013, I thought we'd never see another sub-4 day time. Man, sometimes it is so freaking cool to be wrong!! Yes, let's all wait to hear more from Martin and Jeannie. I greatly prefer to give folks the benefit of the doubt. They flew in from South Africa, so it was quite a big time/money investment for them to do the CTR and it's hard to believe they would be ignorant of the rules. I corresponded a little with Martin prior to the race, and it sounded like he had gone through the entire CTR webpage. Maybe I need to make a couples division after all? Finally, we've had a CTR facebook page for awhile, but I finally did something with it! It's a better framework for posting photos, so feel free to browse and add at will!
