I voted for 7/27 -- last year was 7/28 and it seemed like a perfect weather window. Why mess with success?

I'm planning a touring pace trip in July. Do you all think that starting a trip on July 4th is too early?

Depends mostly on late season snowfall. Tons of info/pics/discussion on this exact question somewhere over on MTBR. Might be good to start a new thread for that discussion here too.

Work Constraints...
I would like to see the start be early on a Sat or Sun morning, this gives one (or two) more days without bleeding past the following weekend for the slower finishers
I know travel 'to/from' is always a issue but even if the CTR started on Sun morn that would still allow Friday night & Sat for travel 'to' time and travel home is dependent on individual finish times anyway so........

7/27 seems good to me too although I'm not sure I"m racing this year. But I should be out riding and cheering no matter what.

OK, that's 3 already for 7/27. However, I've had a few people (here and privately) ask me about starting it on Saturday or Sunday morning. Originally, the weekday start was chosen mainly to avoid crowds at the TH. And for '08, Monday was chosen to maximize motel/campground availability along the trail, since most places near the trail are packed on the weekends that time of year. A Sunday AM start shouldn't be a problem for motel/campground availability. I suppose Saturday wouldn't either, since most people that are *racing* will just bivy along the trail rather than seek out a motel, especially for the 1st night out. Saturday or Sunday minimizes time away from work for most of us also. <raises hand> So, now I'm thinking Saturday/Sunday AM may be the best choice. A full moon on 8/5 makes an 8/1 or 8/2 start rather attractive too. Maybe at 6 or 6:30 am so most can get at least 1 good night's sleep before the race starts? Ahh, so much for the poll... Comments?

Weekend starts are fine with me. It does help from the whole job angle. As to start time, might as well keep it on an even hour, helps with tired math. Anything before say 8am is very beneficial IMO.

Sunday start sounds OK -- motels should be good by Monday as you pointed out (no need to motel the first night).

I like the idea of doing the CTR on the week of the full moon. Although I have other reasons for choosing this week, I think the moon light could be nice later in the week. My only hesitation would be that the monsoon could be a bit sketchy during the first week of August. But last year in the southern mountains, August was better then July. It's a role of the dice either way.

I vote for the same date, it has been a good call. I could start on a weekend, prefer Sunday if it has to be. Move the date towards the moon if you move it. I really really like the moon, but I like being dry better so I voted for what has worked. I`m digging the 5am start. The time should change every year to change logistics a bit. Owen had night #2@ Avalanche Trailhead with a 5am start, holy cow, a lofty goal. Doing that bit on a weekend would stink, please no Saturday start. Amazing how few people I have seen riding the CTR. Hope to see a few non-finishers learn, grow and finish.. Nice to find this gem of a website, thanks.

Due to work I have to vote for an August start. Going to be tough for me to get out of here for a July 20 start. July 27 is more feasible, but not as certain as August. I like the early AM start time. Get out of Denver before it gets too hot.

Hey guys, start date has been set for awhile now:
Sunday, August 2nd, 2009 - 6am
Routing is still open for discussion on the Route Poll thread.
Cheers, Stefan
