That's funny. This route(South to North) seems like it might be gaining some attention?? Good idea DN! Always thinking outide the box! That's good practice!

S to N makes sense (for me at least) as you avoid some of the heat / snow as you travel north....not that is magically makes the route easy or anything! Also if your wife/SO/Buddy is flying out to meet you at the end they get to relax in the hot springs in Banff while you chug the last few miles back SSP

Dave arrived here in Del Norte about 3:00 PM yesterday and spent the night with us. He seems to be on a fast tour pace as opposed to an ITT pace. He left here about 8:00 this morning. He looks good and seems to be feeling good. Other than the tire issue everything is going well, his rear tire is pretty slick already. I offered him some 42mm tires I have but he wants to wait till Salida to get his Panaracer 45mm tires. His JB weld repair on the front rack is holding up great, it broke at the weld in the front where the platform is connected to the rail. He has been a bit sunburned and his skin is peeling a bit. Otherwise he's happy and, hopefully, will go the whole distance this time. We met Dave 3-4 years ago and have seen him several times since but never really got to sit down and spend time with him. He is a very warm and thoughtful guy, pretty bright too. I'm glad Patti and I got to hang out with him. We should be having some south bound riders stop in pretty soon too. I'll try to take time to add some comments on the TD thread as they ride through. Maybe I'll remember to get the camera out. Gary

Awesome dude!!!
Just checked his SPOT. He made it to Salida today. Finally, he'll put proper knobbies on his ride and enjoy the ride more;)

Dave on the dam. One soaked rider. One stoked rider headed for dinner at 7-11 when I got him a 'decent' meal at the chinese joint.

So what tires did he end up putting on? Panaracer Fire Cross 700x45s. They are a true 45 and pretty bomber, they outer knob breadth is sometimes too much for traditional cyclocross forks. They don't roll that great compared to some other "monster cross" tires - but they'll be much more reliable than the WTB Cross Wolfs, which were a pretty risky choice from the get-go, especially on a fixed wheel. He sounded pretty down in Breckenridge - hopefully it will pass and he keeps at it!

It looks like he's still at it! I hope he goes beyond Flagg Ranch so he can be the first person to have completed the entire route on a fixie.

When Dave was here he told that none of his 18, I think, flats were from pinching. Apparently the 32mm Cross Wolf is just wimpy, as Matt suggested. I think he bought them for Trans Iowa and for some reason decided to leave them on for TD. The Fire Cross 45mm is at the opposite end of the spectrum for an adventure cross tire. Personally I would have chosen something in between the two but Dave is a big guy and I would assume the rough high speed downhills are especially hard on tires with a fixie since he can't unweight the bike and float over stuff. The Fisticuff is a pretty cool looking frame. Obviously it has big tire clearance, I think even the Crosscheck has some issues fitting the Firecross. The Fisticuff also has nice paint (powder?) and the welds look great. If I didn't know it already I wouldn't have guessed that it is a bargain priced frame. It's unfortunate that Dave's experience with the skinny tires is only going to worsen the reputation of riding a cross bike on the Divide Route. Many people seem to think it's nuts to do it on skinny tires, I'm not one of them. Finish it Dave!!! Gary

Dave had to scratch south of Steamboat. :^( He really rode great - I thought he'd pull it off in fine style. He sounded really down...keep your head up Dave! Many people seem to think it's nuts to do it on skinny tires, I'm not one of them. I'm with you - though it wouldn't/won't be easy...especially riding sub-25 day pace.

Oh man! He was having the best ride yet. Hard to imagine tackling that bear on a fixie. Great ride Dave! 1133 miles on a fixie? Gawd that's sick. See you soon?
