He took off from Antelope Wells at noon sharp on Friday the 5th, heading north to Banff, AB. You can follow his SPOT progress on on Topofusion at http://topofusion.com/tracker-dividei.php?name=Dave%20NiceHe's riding a fixed gear Cross bike/ 29"er thingamabobber- pretty light setup.

Is that an actual cross bike he is on? What size tires is he running (brand?). Interesting set up. I wish him the best of luck this year. Hopefully it's the year the bad luck stay's away and he can get this done.
Oh, and the messenger bag...geez, that would kill my shoulder!

Thanks for the pics, Brendan. Looks like he's just about through the Gila (one of the harder parts of the route).

Yep, same here - but he has amazing dexterity with the thing. I asked him why the msgr bag (while we were riding) and he quickly flipped the bag to his front and grabbed something out of it, then flipped it back - all without missing a pedal stroke. Makes sense for GDR. Those are some teeny tiny skinny tires for a rigid bike. Ouch, thank goodness for Ergon, Brooks, and flat pedals. GDG!

Noon Monday marks 3 days and about 400 miles. That is one heck of a pace. Do more people switch to skinny? I would. Should we call that a 'Nice' read brake? Dave has made good choices to approach this.

Yep, it's an actual Cross bike- a Vassago Fisticuff. He's running WTB Cross Wolf tires, 700x32 I *think* the bike will swallow a Nanoraptor in the rear if he needs to... we put a Small Block Eight on the front for a ride in Tucson and it cleared fairly well. I have a few more pics on my blog: http://sirenbicycles.wordpress.com/2009/06/06/daves-nice-visit-tour-divide-start/
Other gear as I can recall: Fred Bars, aero bars (tough to use when coasting the fixie though), some nice minimalist racks front & rear (Nashbar, I think), a big giant comfy WTB SST saddle, and a really nifty two-person GoLite singlepole tarptent. B

He's still going. 4 days 21 hours and 500 miles. He's making some call-ins at mtbcast. The last call he made he said he was JB Welding and zip tieing a front rack together What's that green chain?

Zip ties rule!
Dave sounds great - upbeat and happy - in his call ins. By the time he gets to the nemesis territory (Montana) he will be so in the zone.
Living the dream, he is!

Yeah, he sounds good. Hopefully this is the year. when I saw his listed of things he brought that rack was the one thing that made me cringe. Those Performance racks are pretty popular on road touring but I just can't imagine them taking the beating of the GDMBR.
I'd be interested to hear how his hands/wrists are doing with those tires!

Dave's riding great!
I've tried the messenger bag thing before and it can work OK if you don't have too much weight in it - they're handy on the fly but I never really got mine to stay still to my liking for high speed downhill pedaling though. I would have steered him away from the Cross Wolfs too...that's a pretty racy tire with pretty thin sidewalls, and nothing takes a beating like the rear tire on an off-road fixed wheel. They're light, feel good, and roll great though - he'll probably have to replace the rear at Absolute in Salida.

Just listened to the MTB cast update. Several Flats and a broken rack.
Stay on it DAVE!

It looks like Dave finally made it out of Grants. Good to hear--I was worried he wasn't going to find any tubes.

Messenger bag...that makes me cringe.
No offense, but there are better ways to carry gear. Messenger bags were designed for messengers that needed quick, easy access to deliver small-ish parcels, letters, and what not.
They weren't designed for comfort.
They weren't designed for back support.
Sure looks rad though...

People have made similiar trips with much less advanced gear. Check out the picture on the Tour Divide homepage. No offense, but I say ride what ya got. Emphasis on ride! Rock on Dave

I did a Bikepack ride not long ago on my cross, granted the tires were super old but I had like 6 flats in like 30 miles it was awful, I totally had to pull the plugg cause I was out of flats and patches, he needs to fatten up that tread, get some slime tubes, fight the good fight! and Felonious is right, There may be better ways, but it can be done with what he has and less if needed.

Looks like Dave might be off course? Yeah, he's good now though. The roads in CO are so much better, especially on a 'cross rig - I'm sure he's glad to have NM in rearview.

Yep, NM is much rougher and I would think quite a bit more challenging on the narrow tire fixie. CO should roll much faster.
I just compared his progress with that of Paula and I (fastest known S->N divide traversal). Dave is about a day ahead of us, so it's looking good for him to beat that 'record', though he did take the two paved alternates in NM (as allowed by the divide rules) where we followed the dirt.
I hope he keeps rolling and finishes it up! Go Dave go!

Go Dave! Looks like he is having more than his fair share of flats...I guess working in a shop h should be pretty fast at fixing them by now Sounds like he has some beefy tyres (tires) waiting for him in Salida. SSP
