Excellent,

Looks like 9 of us.  Two more shifts and then I'm on my way Thurs afternoon.  In rest mode now and going to pack in the morning.  Dry weather will be nice.  Looks like some serious  climbing quickly.  Look forward to meeting you all.  See you Thursday night.

Cheers

Looks like I'm tracking and ready to roll. Most of the packing is done and now I just have to wrap up my work projects before I leave. Good to see a larger turn out this year. Can't wait to see the full route.

Erin, GASP, you outed me! What gave it away? The anxiety? ha ha ha.  Dealing with a fever now.  Everything is ready. Bike is prepped.  Calories prepped. Health is iffy. Worst case scenario and I don't get better, I turn around and go camp at Navajo Lake and slow roll back to start.  Or I get as far as Navajo and make it a staycation. Apparently Utah is a beautiful place, might as well enjoy it.

Summer arrives officially on Sunday, but it's not waiting for the Solstice this year. After 2 months of cool and wet, temps look to be on the warm side with near single-digit humidity. Pack more water than you think you need! To keep it interesting, there will likely be some snow to contend with on Sydney peaks.

I'll have the SPOT rentals with me, so look for the guy in the silver xterra to get your SPOT.

Looking forward to meeting this year's group of Dixie crackheads!

I called around today to confirm hours as I was seeing different times from various sources.  I was able to talk to someone at each who confirmed:

Tod's 7am-8pm daily
Harold's Place 730am-10am (not open for lunch or dinner)
Panguitch Lake General Store 7am-9pm daily
Burger Barn 8am-8pm Sat/Sun/holidays, 11-8pm weekdays

If I can get out of work early I might roll in by 8-830 tomorrow night, otherwise I'll try not to wake everyone up at 2-3am!

My tracker seems to be up now, stoked to get out and start riding!

Sadly I am out. I was holding out for my new bike to arrive and my current bike blew a fork seal this week. I will ITT the route later this summer. After my DNF last year, me and this course have issues. Enjoy Spruce Trail all!

Wow, Harold's Place provides a narrow window for eats. Any idea if the Trading Post or Red Canyon Indian Store/ RV Park has any treats? I did read a yelp review that said the Bryce Canyon Trading Post has free coffee. So there is that. I am sure there is a coke somewhere around there.

As I was reviewing some route notes from Erin's ride last year I see there is a part of the file that is not quite clear enough. Between mile 102 and 103 of the "fullres" file the route leaves the Grandview trail and does a short climb to the plateau. This is red line shows the current gpx file, the actual route is in orange.

The history on this section: in '09 or '10 a mudslide wiped out ~ 1/4 mile of the Grandview trail to the east, so this reroute to the plateau was more or less a necessity. To complicate it, there was a fire after the reroute was made, and a new trail section to the plateau was built. It's pretty nice, it used to go straight up Wink

As long as you don't blow past the intersection you should be ok.  If I recall there was a trail sign there.

I was wondering why you had the route climb up and get on fire road there rather than continue on Grandview and take the whole Crawford Pass trail.  When I rode through there in 2012 the trail wasn't in great shape but wasn't horrible - I think just a few gully crossings had to be walked and then some sections were sandy. But I recall the lower part of Crawford being pretty good with nice scenery.

Super bummed to miss the group start, looks like a great turnout this year.  I'm gonna ITT starting early Sun and follow everyone's tracks.  Have a great time out there!

What a great group of riders that showed up this year! 14 toed the line at a chilly 7am.

Large range of bike types too. Bikepacking pros showed up this year.

Even a fatbike!

And they are off.

I rode the opening climb + Louder Ponds. Course is in primo shape with water everywhere in the Brian Head area. OK maybe a little snow...

Aaron Johnson was looking fit, fast and relaxed - the killer combo. He's leading the charge midway through and about to enter the really interesting stuff.

Scott Schaefer is killing it on his 27.5+, not far behind Aaron. And, a tight grouping of riders right on Scott's heels are keeping it interesting.

There's also a ringer in the field who's spot is not tracking (T2), Todd Tanner.

Tom was worried about making it to Tod's before they close at 8, looks like he got there about 7:30.

And, Da Tortoise took a detour to Strawberry point to catch the sunset? CA smoke is really making the sunset colors pop.

Tons of action on the route, fun stuff. Can't wait to see how it all goes down.

Very bummed to announce I'm out. Todd (sans tracker) and I were having a great run, really enjoying the trails (Grandview was awesome!) and scenery, but unfortunately as it got dark I started to have some saddle sore issues. Totally bizarre as I've never had problems before, even in much longer races. Probably had to do with the heat yesterday and lots of sweating (but I've ridden plenty in hotter temps with no problems, so I dont know). Anyways, it got worse and worse as the night went on, to the point it was unbearable to sit on the seat. No amount of chamois lube or ibuprofen could help. Really infuriating. Had to ride the 20 miles coming into Harold's Place standing up. Thunder Mountain at sunrise was incredible, by the way. I knew there was no way I could ride another 60 miles and 10k vert standing, so I had to let it go. Todd's out there crushing it, he's super strong and I know he'll shave quite a bit of time off the record. Such an incredible course, I'm glad I at least got to see as much of it as I did and I'll be back to finish it off. Thanks again Dave, good luck to everyone still out there, and watch out for sweaty saddle demons!

Oh no! I thought you had a SPOT malfunction. Sorry to hear your plight. If it's any consolation, the current record holder had the same issue on his first attempt - IIRC he stopped from the same point. Sunrise on Thunder Mtn is a good final impression Wink

Glad you otherwise enjoyed the route, and it will await your return.

good to see so many guys riding this one without stopping for camp.  Shout out to Scott Shirey and Rick Miller having great rides out there.  Looks like Rick took a short nap last night and was able to use that extra energy to catch back up!
Any word on what's up with Aaron Johnson's spot?

A lot of great rides going down this year!

Aaron's spot stopped because he had to pull due to saddle sores - he posted a couple posts up.

Also, I just got off the phone with Todd (T2). He was having a great ride and on target to set a new course record, but his GPS ran out of juice shortly after Panguitch lake and he missed some of the spruce trail, and possibly the Dark Hollow descent? That's unfortunate, he was killing it.

So, the course record still stands - unless Jason can finish in the next 40 minutes! (before 8:45 I believe)

We have finishers!

Note to finishers - the SPOT tracker finish times are best guesses, please send your actual finish time via PM or email.

Jason Wolfe took the 1 hour bonus out and back to the Pink Cliffs and caught it at sunrise. That had to be surreal.

Mike Barklow, Rick Miller and Scott Shirey are also in. All 4 got to ride Dark Hollow in the, um, dark.

Great job to all the finishers. I enjoyed riding with Jason, Mike and Scott. Unfortunately, I'm a dnf. After a torn sidewalk 8 miles in and 3 more flats yesterday I went into survival mode. Slept at panguitch lake and hit the reset button o oh to get another flat this morning. Headed to spruce with a broken pump and no co2 left crossing my fingers. All was well until my track showed 2 options at the top and I chose the wrong one. Still a great experience and I'll be back next year.
