My friend, who's pictures those are and heading northbound, said that there was no warning prior to getting to the closed spillway.

His comment from July 25, 2011:

"It is a beautiful day, and I am thinking that Erica passed on a rather beautiful ride on a beautiful day. And that much is true. I turn on the trail to the west side of Spray Lake and ride through some really scenic bits of forest, lake, and mountain. Then I come upon the point on the map where it says to cross on Canyon Dam and... WTF CANYON DAM IS NOT THERE?! Yeah, no shit. The spillway is wide open and I'm pretty sure that a lot of the dam is missing if there is a dam under all that water. I crosscountry up and down the river a bit, looking for anything that looks like a safe way across, but there aren't any. I briefly entertain the idea of carrying my crap across piecemeal while creeping along the floating boom at the mouth of the river, slap myself for entertaining such idiocy, and ride back to the Smith Dorrien Spray Road.

I think that detour took about 5 hours, and it is getting pretty late in the evening. I cook and eat dinner in a pullout and put down a few km down the road on a hillside hidden by piles of rocks. I should have been to Banff today, but instead I am not yet even to Canmore. Oh well, it was a good ride anyways."

From what I can get from articles, this was a generator failure, while the the secondary was on maintenance.  Canyon Dam and Goat Creek are the spillway emergency outlet.  Flows up from 15-20 cfs to 800-1000 cfs.  Good news is that the operators will be very motivated to fix this as it represents significant cash flow.  Doesn't help those immediately in the area though.  Flows might be lower in early morning, but usually hard to tell on a spillway.
NM update: Carson and Santa Fe NF have lifted travel bans, except FR 27 south of Abiquiu.  FS is doing road evaluation this week, as it stands right now, I'm hearing a few weeks to end of the year closure (hopefully this is only for motor vehicle usage).

Heading to AW from Phoenix.  Hope to officially start this evening.  Hope to see some of you on the trail.  Good Luck to all the other late starters.

Well, I'm out from heat exhaustion.  Some notes on the route for SB'ers.
You can get an exemption for the FR 27 closure in Santa Fe NF,  they prefer a written petition with a letter exemption.  I have the contact info if anyone would like it.  I was able to get this in email form.
There are bridge closure signs for FR 150 in the Gila section.  This has construction equipment in the area, but was clear and passable when I went through.
Had a good time, but the extended ~95F temps got to me and ended up slowing me down too much.  Might have made if I could have cooled off from the exhaustion for a day, but in the Beaverhead area that means no food resupply.  Still had fun for the short time I was out.  The CDT single track section is a lot of fun in the NB direction.  Would like to try this again, but honestly my spinal condition might not allow me in the future.  Have too many things on my bucket list anyway.
Thanks to all who route this course on paper and electronically.  Thanks all to who have ever cut roads, laid gravel, or put shovel to ground, for this course.
Best of wishes to all on the course or with thoughts on it.

Good luck - you do realize the goat creek trail is closed?  Are you going rundle riverside?

Craig Stappler, aka 'Stappy', left my place just before 6am this morning, and is riding Rundle Riverside to begin his ITT.  He looks really good and is in good spirits.

Good luck Craig!

Looks like Crag is ourside of Elkford. Thanks to his early start he should roll into Sparwood well before dark! I wonder if he has his sights set on Sparwood, Corbin, or Butts cabin?

He'll be riding to Flathead. He's hoping there's vacancy at the cabin for the night.

Craig is putting the hammer down...

the early start from Banff put him at Butt's cabin on night one. Brilliant. Record Pace. He should easily be able to make it to Whitefish tonight. Or further if he is motivated. Go go go. And now JP on his tail? ooooohhhhh. Fun to watch.

Yep, Craig is looking good. He'll be a nice carrot for JayP. The live tracker on the Tour Divide site has been returned to the main route / stats for your viewing pleasure.

Anyone know how JP and Craig have/are dealing with the detour and how this affects their standing in the GC? They are both motivated and I would hate to see them have an asterisk next to their names...

and on a side note IMHO it would be cool if the TD officially ran on an every other year fall /spring cycle....

I'm hoping Craig rolls well beyond whitefish after a good meal.

GC standing will depend on Matthew et al.  If the detour is short and comparable then it has no effect on GC (no asterisk).
