Re: Stappy

I'll throw in my WAG (Wild Ass Guess).

He posted back in June that he had to skip the June grand depart due to a nasty Achilles issue, but this may be more of a mech issue.  Backtrack could just be a navi error in the dark, and unrelated to whatever the bigger issue is.

But yes, the drop in speed also makes for more WAGging re: injury issue.

Hope all will be OK!

Craig has indeed had issues with flaring Achilles.  He had a good taping and body-awareness routine worked out when he was here last week.  Hell, he had a good routine worked out for just about everything!  Very well prepared!

I hope the injury is not the cause for the troubles, but I do fear that it may be...

Hope you are doing ok Craig!

Viva Stappy!

Craig looks to be moving again, back to the route.

Good news hopefully!

Craig spent the night at the Angler Inn. Got there at 1am. He may also have been looking for a place to buy more tape for the achilles.

Saddle forward, cleats all the way back, and lots o' tape! That's what got me through Montana (and Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado!).

I added the record (09 ML) splits to the ITT tracker where Jay and Craig are being tracked.  Right now only Jay's splits are accurate though.  I'll see if I can adjust for Craig's start time.

Jay is in Lima. Craig is at Flagg ranch. Tomorrow should be fun to watch. It appears Jay is catching Craig, which should be fun for us watching......

From what I can tell, Jay has caught and passed Craig if you factor in Craig's 30 hr lead.
Anything can happen of course, but interesting to watch.  Would like to see Craig get back on his pace and keep things interesting.

Is anyone else planning a fall start?

Agreed.  Get on the next flight Pete.  All that cookie dough on the peninsula should have been plenty of carbo loading.

Would love to get a call in from Craig...it's hard to decipher his intent from the spot dots. JP is closing in if he is indeed still in Pinedale. JP can probably smell the lycra ahead of him now....

Craig has his parcel pickup in Pinedale. Fresh tires. Fresh clothes ect. Post office doesn't open until 8:45. Hopefully whatever he's been needing over the last couple of days is in that box!

Yeah, this is an interesting pairing to watch. Jay knows exactly the pace and effort level his body can withstand (and given his 8-hour break last night, he may well be right near the limit). Craig, new to this realm of racing, looks to have unfortunately been hobbled. I nearly dropped out in WY in this year's TD, and I know Jefe was really, really suffering from similar connective tissue ailments and had similar thoughts of quitting for fear of more serious damage. It sure is a fine line...

I'm hoping to see Craig continue to push on at a more relaxed rate and enjoy himself. The weather here in Colorado is finally going to cool down a bit, and it'll start to feel like autumn in the mountains. Hopefully with good rest every night, his body may get a chance to heal up a bit.

It looks as though Craig's spot is not working because it shows that he has not moved for over 16 hours. This is not correct as he was at the post office at 11:30. Does anyone know how to tell him that it is not working?

8 hrs at/near a nice high country WY lodge in Turpin Mdws .... this, plus earlier "extended" rest periods, gives me the impression that JP is minding his rest periods very well, and either pushing hard(er) during ride time or saving a bit in the tank for a tail-end push.

Well, if it's truly not working or not turned on, and he's out beyond Pinedale and into South Pass/Atlantic City/Great Basin, the next best place to get a hold of a rider would be to email Kristen at Brush Mtn Lodge, just South of WY/CO border.  It's hard to imagine her missing these 2 riders(racers).  After that, you could pass a message via Orange Peel bikes in Steamboat, after that possibly via the Como B&B South of Breckenridge.

Jay's prev. TD strategy has been to go fast and get tons of rest so he may be doing that again. A little different from the, "go slowish w/little sleep" strategy others may use. It's nothing but impressive that he can go so fast and do it again the next day.
