 Mexico to Utah. ~750 miles. 80,000+ feet of climbing.Longest singletrack bike race in the world.Mandatory 21 mile portage across the Grand Canyon. You will suffer. April 23rd, 2010, 6:30am, Border of US/Mexico. Concurrent start with the Arizona Trail 300.

I think its 21 miles actually Scott has a tendency to see everything in track miles. The park service pamphlet I had called it 21 the official guide calls it 21.4 but hay whats a mere 3.4 miles. It's not like you are carrying your bike on your back. Oh wait you are! Oh and look at the profile it's the biggest change in elevation of the whole route. Wish I could join you.

So scott does that mean you're going to step up to the plate again? no matter how often 'conflict of interest' is asserted by the 'outside world', any self-supported, multi-day MTB race organizer worth his/her salt leads by example (at least on the 'inaugural'). |

I always wondered if it would be legal to carry a bicycle across Grand Canyon National Park ... even on one's back?
35-50 pounds of dead weight aside, the North and South Kaibab trails are pretty mellow hikes. Even if they do lose and gain ~5,500 feet of elevation, I'm doubtful that this is even close to the worst this sufferfest will surely dole out.

Dammit, Scott. I wasn't going to head down to AZ this spring, but you just had to throw this at the world.
I do have some damn comfortable hike-a-bike shoes, but I'm not sure my little arms could carry a couple 29er wheels for 20 miles.
Put me down as a possibly maybe.

Oh yes. I would not have 'put it out in the world' if not intending to participate. I do reserve the right to switch to the 300 if I can't get any takers. I've ITT'd it already. I suspect this route is different than either of his previous thru rides. New route, new trails, new record.

Yuri hit the nail. Significantly harder route than what I raced in '05. Significantly easier than what Lee B. and I fought through in '05. The aim with this route is to strike a balance. The first time I hiked rim to rim in the Grand Canyon, in 2004, I was certain it was going to be the hardest single day of effort I ever embarked on. Ha ha ha. If I try to conceptualize the Arizona Trail Race, from what little I know about the Arizona Trail, I feel like bike-portaging through the Grand Canyon would be a highlight. After a few hundred miles of intermittent but frequent hike-a-bikes skirting that frustrating edge of rideable, I know I for one would be grateful just to throw the useless thing on my back and walk free. But that's just me. :-) |
