I'm planning an ITT of ACA's Allegheny Mountains Loop beginning Friday October 14th or Saturday October 15th. This 400 mile loop straddles the VA/WV border and has lots of gravel, some pavement and zero singletrack. According to MapMyRide.com, the route has just over 24,000 feet of climbing. Fat tires are recommended however. I believe the route is most challenging in the clockwise direction and I will opt for "The Ridge" and "Mountain Lake" off-road/gravel alternates for added climbing. Perhaps this could be an annual ride/gathering like so many to our south and out west (i.e. TD, AZT, CTR, TNGA, etc.) I've spoken to locals and they say the foliage should be prime in the middle of October. did most of the loop the third week of may this year. took the dunmore cutoff and missed the northern part of the route. the ridge alternate in the counter clockwise direction was killer! I plan on finishing it up in the spring. for a little extra we took a wrong turn at the switzerland trail, added about two hours to the day, also killer...........

Can't believe I didn't see this earlier. Mid-October is indeed peak foliage time around here (I'm in Central VA but ride the mountains as often as I can). The attachments for routes dropped off earlier messages; could someone re-post them or point me in the right direction?
I'm not up for a long bikepacking trip NOW, but I hope to be someday and this is practically in my backyard. If any of the route passes near the Reddish Knob area (VA / WV border) I can provide good and recent reports on local trails.

Here's a link for everyone to follow ... http://goo.gl/Mfx7DThere seems to be plenty of places to park just off campus (i.e. grocery stores, local bike shops, etc.). I will almost certainly be hitting the Starbucks just before my start and plan to be rolling at 8:00am on Friday morning just in front of the Virginia Tech War Memorial Chapel. The weather appears to be improving throughout the weekend and I imagine I'll stick out like a sore thumb amongst all those "kids" heading to class. Although no rules are posted (yet), I intend to complete the Allegheny Mountains Loop in a fully "self-supported" bikepacking fashion. If anyone else is planning on this ride and you have a spot tracker, let me know and I'll get you in touch with Scott Morris and try to get you on the map. Keep in mind, this route can be ITT'd any time throughout the year. And perhaps, the 2nd Friday of October each year can evolve into a group ITT start. |

Hey Seth ... the route does indeed pass within about 20 miles of Reddish Knob. Hopefully those up for the challenge of AML will consider this ride any time of year, but particularly on the 2nd Friday in October in subsequent years. It falls at a fine time on the calendar for east-coast bikepackers and, as you said, "Mid-October is indeed peak foliage time around here". Sounds like a good enough reason to me ... |

Delaying my start ...
Being away from home 18 of the past 23 days has taken it's toll and left me with very little time to pack and prepare for my ITT of the Allegheny Mountains Loop this weekend.
I decided that if I couldn't get packed and ready by 2am tonight that I would delay my start at least until Saturday (15th) or another weekend all together.
I will post back here about my future plans or start another thread altogether.
Good luck to anyone attempting the AML this weekend.

this is not TOO far from where I live, I plan to do it as an early year practice ride.
not exact sure of the dates, but I have ability to use several weekdays around work vs just weekends so will probably do that, if anyone is interested...I know there are some sweet dirt trail options off of this route, and some other stuff, but I will be sticking just to the routing course right now....
