I did maybe over object to the drop to Shenavall, sorry! And secretly, I fancy giving the route a go earlier in May, just don't anyone mention that to my wife please

No worries, the new way in is much better. A fast doubletrack descent down to a beautiful wooded area by the river (good bivvy spot) and then singletrack along to the bothy.

My only concern with the 9am start is whether the real food cafe is open early enough. I've emailed them to clarify anyway.

I've put together the maps for the HTR550 on Memory Map as a PDF. The file is on my Google Drive so PM me for a link (don't want to publish it on the web as I'm not too sure on the distribution licence).
I printed to portrait, and it comes out at 48 pages of 1:50k, but closer to the time I may try and reduce the page count by switching between portrait and landscape.
Similarly, I've got the maps up for the Cairngorms Loop if anyone needs them.

Beware the grumpiest pizza men in the world if you arrive at 9.50pm and order 5 pizzas, chips and drinks. They close at 10pm.
Also a shortage of 12" pizzas at that time of night

Thanks for preparing the maps Alasdair. There will be one tweak that I know of. On the northern loop, the Achfary Forest has been chopped down and the track up from Lochmore Lodge pretty much destroyed. There is now a new logging road through the tree stumps that starts from halfway between the lodge and Achfary, this joins the route about one kilometer up the hill. If anyone has a GPS track of this please can you send it to me.

Dammit! I was up that way on 30th December and noticed the track. Had I known this was an issue I'd have tried to make time to get the GPX track for it. I did the section from West Merkland to Achfary though! I'll do a wee blog entry about it but in the mean time, here's a picture to whet the appetite

Very impressed to see you rode the most northerly section solo at the end of December in that weather! It's not the most difficult part of the route but hopefully by May, even the Fisherfield traverse will seem easier. Great to see someone checking out the course so early in the season. Nice write up and photos.

We've just had the wettest December on record. Much of what I had to walk should be rideable in a "normal" spring/summer

Hi,
Any recommendation regarding a map for the GPS. I've found some OSM maps in the web, but the level of detail leaves a lot to be desired. Thanks!

Michael Have a look for OS maps. These will give you a great amount of detail for the route. 1:25000 will be loads of detail, 1:50000 will be more than plenty. There are various sources charging various amounts, but this seems to be the best price wise. Not used them myself, but others have recommended them http://www.ioffer.com/i/garmin-uk-gb-discoverer-1-50k-v3-00-2012-full-map-sd-523378201

Or...use the open source maps and save yourself a lot of money. I used them last year with zero issues - on a Garmin eTrex 20 FWIW

Those ioffer maps are decent though. Twenty something quid and they work with basecamp so you can view them on your PC.
