If any racers are interested, we would love to publish your story on Bikepackers Magazine. I know only a few have finished, and many more have DNF'ed, but it would be great to get a racers perspective, and photos. PM me if you are interested or Email me at Neil@bikepackersmagazine.com Thanks.

I would really like to attempt this some day, it seems like one hell of an experience, especially when you factor in weather.

Thanks for posting the pics!  This race looks really rad!  I'd like to add it, and the race in the Holy Land, to my list!  Congrats to all!

Really enjoyed seeing these pics and all the bike set ups. I thought there would be a lot more mud guards (U.S.= fenders) on bikes. Thx for posting the link.

Big congrats to everyone finished and good luck to everyone still out there.

Mudguards didn't make a huge difference to my set up given the conditions on Sunday but them and my full waterproofs, including gaitors made 15 hours of rain and muddy water bearable. Pity my legs were shot from overdoing it on Saturday....

In all honesty Jon, seeing someone out on the trail and talking about the race without prompting was one of the highlights of my day. Little things like that just gave me a boost and kept me going.

I'm still riding on the emotional high of actually finishing this, so I expect that sooner or later the tiredness will set in...

Got word from Iona yesterday - FIRST OFF she's not scratching, just going to be back a little later than planned, hoping for this afternoon finish. Yesterday was a bit of a nightmare apparently - but otherwise, she is doing well!

What an event. Spent far to much time preparing and realising I had not prepared properly. Made Fort Augustus in 12hrs only to be sick whilst feeding my face. A wet Sunday and unable to stomach any food resulted in a hard 60 miles to Strathpeffer and a warm dry room. With virgin and uncharted territory to come and with the racing head down the toilet I relieved myself of the race baggage and unwilling to climb off the bike and onto the Chigwell train back to Tyndrum I planned a tour west to rejoin the race route at the bottom of Torridon. Result, 4 days of wonderful cycling. 400 miles of views and vistas which blew me away. Bothys and trail side camping. Rain and sunshine followed me back to Tyndrum. Mike Davies joined me for a while as we climbed and cycled through Glen Affric and onto Fort Bill. Thanks for the company Mike. After a small diversion to explore a valley near Glen Coe, Tyndrum awaited.
I knew the HT550 would teach me a few lessons. Prep is everything. Experience is essential. Eating is life itself. Bring on 2015.

Hats off to everyone (finishers and non-finishers alike). I am amazed at how fast some of the people finished it but I have to say that I'm even more amazed by the people who stuck with it, no matter what to finish. Those people are the ones that I really take my hat off to.

I'm finally starting to feel like a human being after the cold/flu thing that hit me on day one and took me out on day 2. In fact, I'm trying to figure out if there's a week or so I can fly back over and go for attempt #2... er, a complete ITT. How does the weather change in that part of the world over the course of the summer? Maybe more importantly, is there a time of the year that I DON'T want to do it, other than winter?

Early September can be good in the Highlands like the week gone. Mid summer can be very wet, and the midges this year are foecast to be epic.

...for that I can only apologise. I really do hope that our chat on the train wasn't enough to give you my cold. I felt at my worst on day 1, and now have a lingering chesty cough that should be gone soon.

Worth remembering that the red deer stalking season starts on 1 July and September will be peak season. For that reason I wouldn't recommend attempting the route in September.

There is a scheme (hillphones) whereby you can contact the estates you're crossing to check that you won't be getting in the way on your route but on such a long route there are bound to be places where you are trying to ride right through the middle of a stalk. There would also be literally dozens of different estates you're crossing, so a lot of phone calls.

Nice journal Rich! Way to push through. I swear you and I had a ton of the same experiences because I could hear my own voice in your words. I have 2 of almost the exact same photos from 2013 sorry Greg May... I know you've just been sick seeing my feet again

Thankyou. I reckon a lot of riders would have sore feet, it was only the last day that I managed to keep mine dry.
