I've been pretty bummed about all the races getting cancelled because of the current virus situation and have been kicking around the idea of creating a locals only ultra endurance challenge that starts and ends in San Francisco. The idea is that I would share a route that people could time trial at their leisure and then post the results to a website as they come in. It would be open to people who live within riding distance of the start who complete the challenge solo. Riders would be required to be completely self supported and self contained (as in no stopping at any businesses along the route).

For the course I've mapped out 145 miles of mostly dirt that uses as much of the bike legal trails/gravel in the Marin Headlands, Mt Tam watershed and Point Reyes as possible. It could be done in a single day but I think some people would take two. See tentative route below.

Would anybody here be interested? Is it even ethical to do something like this in the current climate?

If I lived there I'd be all over this, absolutely love riding out there, love the contrast with where I normally ride (high desert CO). Got it bookmarked for next time.

I love the route and the challenge, but I think all the campgrounds are closed, and I don't believe that any of that stuff allows wild camping. So if people wanna do it all in a day, seems legit, but hard to do it as a bikepacking race at the moment, I think.

Hi all - new member here. I've mountain-biked and backpacked for years but only very recently have been grabbed by the notion of bikepacking. I don't have a "real" bike-packable ride yet but I'm working on it. I've never biked this far in a day but I'm pretty sure I'd have no problem doing it with an overnight. Part of me is curious to try it out. So, I'd be game. I live in SF, not far from your start part. FWIW, this past weekend I did two loops from home to Marin and back. I rode to Tamarancho yesterday but there was a sign there indicating the trail was closed until May 4 (today). I passed on riding it, but did notice a few people coming off/on the trail. So, it does make we wonder if other trails on your route will be similarly closed. But, again, I'm game to try if/when the coast is clear.

I'm going to just leave this here...

You can check out the updated route and info here: https://www.radtrail.com/blog/2020/5/6/san-francisco-amp-points-north-ultra-cruise

For now please only attempt this if you live close to the start and have experience doing really long rides. As sashax mentioned none of the camp sites along the route are currently open so this is going to have to be done all in one go for now.

All the Trails and roads along the route are currently open for people who hike or bike in.
