Yeah, and it looks like there are two options--a mostly-gravel route, and one with singletrack "alternates"!
I've tried to get them to post the GPX file, and they don't want to--they seem to want to own the route or something. Someone needs to get out there and ride it, so that they can post a GPX!

Yea, I was saddened when I saw how much they wanted to do the unsupported straight through option of the race. That is a quite a bit of money for what mostly equates to them keeping your time.

Maybe someone needs to add this route to the the end of CTR, as a "prologue."  You mean epilogue? I think maybe they don't want to give up the GPX since that is one thing you get when you pay for the use of the Huts -- you get the route info too. (When not part of the race, just touring). Interesting that they are running a race on 200+ miles for money. Guess when you already have the permits/contacts for running guided and self-guided tours, it makes sense. Thanks for posting this. Will be interesting to see how many people do the self-supported category @$250. |

Yes, epilogue would be the correct word, if it is added to the end of the race. Thanks for the correction, Scott.
I don't have a problem with them charging a fee for the race--especially if they have permits, insurance, etc. But I wish that they would be kind enough to post the gpx for those who might want to ITT the route or just tour it. Seems like they would have very little to lose, and a decent amount of positive exposure to gain.

We did the hut system trip two years ago... I had contemplated using that trail system as a warmup/test in prep for CTR last year...but all in one big push. When we rode the hut trip we opted to do the main route (not the singletrack options) so that if we ever came back to do it again, it would be all new. It is a lovely time. Great trails, well run, well stocked huts (beer in all of them). For those interested, pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gregclimbs/sets/72157624665894353/I have now collected a gps trace obviously There are some definite changes I would make - especially to the last day - I would ride the whole enchilada...but my travelling companions were ready for the truck so we hit sand flats road all the way in to Moab (which is the designated "course")... g |

How long is the paved section? Any idea how long the singletrack sections are?

Love the idea of combining this with the CTR... And heck while you're at it, there is also the Trans-Utah route which is largely singletrack all the way from St. George to Moab, so potentially, you could map out a 1,000 mile route that is 70-80% singletrack... That could be something special!

A route like that definitely piques my interest... even more so than say the Divide Route. You'd essentially see dozens of different landscapes and terrain all condensed into a thousand miles. Not to mention starting/ending at an elevation of 2,800ft and high points at over 13,000ft. It would be amazing! Seems like 11 or 12 days would be a fast but attainable pace. Two weeks would be a good strong goal to shoot for! I just crunched the numbers: CTR: 470mi 65,000ft SJH2H: 210mi 20,972ft TU: 380mi 48,000ftTOTAL: 1,060miles 134,000ft elevation gain Toby, My Summer calendar is already filling in pretty quickly with trips/races/events... But I'd definitely be interested in this as a possibility in 2013! Also, check this link out. It has elevation profiles, turn by turn directions, as well as gps waypoints for the San Juan course... I sort of figured that my next big thing, maybe in 2013/14, would be the AZT 750. But this is starting to look pretty interesting. I like your point about the varied landscape and terrain.

it was pointed out to me by a friend I referred this thread to that one reason that SJHs don't publish the gpx is that part of the course is on private land. I don't know how much, and if the singletrack options avoid this or not... might have to spend some time with the packet again to look and see...

I love the motto "Adventure without the weight" that the race site has. Good time of year to be doing some miles like that. My interest is perked. Only wish it was on the front end of the CTR.

Cool sounding race, especially the supported version for those so inclined! But the $250 for a self-supported solo race blows me away. That better be one dang good party at the end.
And for the record, Dave H's TransUtah route doesn't make it to Moab. It doesn't even come close, so you'd have to be creative and find your own way from Moab to over near Escalante. Then you could join his 380-mile route.
