Greetings, I'm looking for information on single-speed gearing suitable for the CTR. I've used a 36x22 set-up with some success in the Sierra, but I would really appreciate advice on what successful single speed racers have used on the CTR. Cheers, Karl

Only 2 people have successfully SS'd the CTR. I believe but am not 100% that Shelman used 32x22 on a 29er. I used a 34x20 on a 26er and frankly wouldn't have minded easier. How loaded are you, what size wheel and how fast do you think you can go?

I was crap last year on the CTR, mainly due to my knees pooping out on me. I was running a 32x22 and it was a good gear for me on a 29er.

Dave you are crazy. The CTR needs big rubber, esp up front. Seriously!

RE: 45c tires
I've only ridden a 10-12 mile segment of the CTR before and all I can say is: "That's nuts!"

Thanks for the good advice... I'm riding a 29er and I am not carrying much gear (fastpacking load of about 6 lbs of gear), but I am 6'7" and 198 lbs (read strong but not advantaged when it comes to strength to weight ratio on climbs). I think I'll shift to a 32 tooth chainring with the 22 tooth white industries freewheel just to prevent any tendonitis, etc. Thanks, Karl

I'm no SSer, but all I can say is that I'm psyched to have a 20T granny ring on the front this go around! It's good to have a low base-weight, but don't forget to add in how many pounds of food you'll need to get from B.V. to Silverton. That extra weight, the hardest riding of the course, plus a couple huge days in the legs already... Might gear just a tad lower than you originally intend. There are only a few places (in the detours) where you will be frustratingly spun out on a SS, otherwise, the CTR is mostly steeply up and steeply down.
And as for the skinny tires, I'll be running a super narrow Rampage (only 2.35") up front on my 29er. More fun on this kind of terrain:

I'll be running either a 32-21 or 32-22, 32-21 is my normal gearing, one tooth more for the CLIMBS....peace Jefe
